Transcription Workshop Sam Hellmuth (University of York) & Dana Chahal (University of Melbourne) The aim of this workshop is to explore general issues in intonational transcription in the specific context of spoken Arabic dialects. After a short initial overview, we will illustrate some of the specific issues that we encountered when adapting transcription systems proposed for English (ToBI and IViE) for use with Arabic (on LA and EA, respectively), then close by suggesting some desiderata for a future transcription system for use in establishing the range of intonational variation among spoken Arabic dialects. The workshop will provide those with little or no prior experience of prosodic transcription with an introduction to the task (through simple practical exercises), but is also intended to stimulate exchange amongst those with experience in transcription of different varieties of Arabic (with time for questions and discussion).
