8th Grade Latin 2 2009-2010 Monroe Course Description Welcome to Latin 2 for the 2009-2010 school year. This class will focus on the fundamentals of the Latin language and will incorporate the history and foundations of this so called dead language. The purpose of the class is not for you to merely memorize and translate Latin words into English and vice versa, but for you to have a firm grasp on the Latin language. To accomplish this goal the following areas will be studied: I. Use of Latin grammar and vocabulary. II. Translation from Latin to English and vice versa. III. History of Roman Culture. IV. Correlation between Latin and English. V. Ability to listen and translate. There will be homework, quizzes, and test throughout the year as well as one big project to happen in the fourth quarter of this school year. Course Syllabus We will be covering a vast amount of information throughout the year, therefore it is imperative that you maintain a well organized binder and keep all notes, quizzes, tests, and handouts throughout the year! The following is a list of the units that will be covered throughout the year: I. Review of Stages 4-6 II. Stage 7 “cena”: Perfect tense (other than v-stems). Sentence pattern ACCUSATIVE + VERB. Cultural Background: Burial customs; beliefs about life after death. III. Stage 8 “gladiatores”: Accusative plural. Superlative adjectives. Cultural Background: The amphitheater and gladiatorial shows. IV. Stage 9 “thermae”: Dative singular and plural. ego, tu: nominative, dative, accusative. Sentence pattern NOMINATIVE + DATIVE + ACCUSATIVE + VERB. Cultural Background: The Roman baths V. Stage 10 “rhetor”: 1st and 2nd persons plural present including esse. Comparative adjectives. Cultural Background: The Roman education system; books and writing materials VI. Stage 11 “candidati”: Intransitive verbs with dative placet nos, vos: nominative, dative, accusative. Stage 12 “Vesuvius”: 1st and 2nd persons (singular and plural) imperfect and perfect. 1st and 2nd persons (singular and plural) imperfect and esse. Cultural Background: The eruption of Vesuvius; excavation of Pompeii and Herculaneum. VII. Review of Unit 1 and Exam: Test will consist of Vocabulary Translation (English to Latin and Latin to English, Paragraph Translation, and Cultural Questions). Upon completion of Unit 1, I will introduce Unit 2 of the Cambridge Latin Course. It is my goal to complete Stages 13-16 by the end of the year. In order for all of you to be successful in this class it is imperative that you keep up with the vocabulary flashcards, the translations and all the notes that are given in class. If you miss a lecture for whatever reason it is vital for you to see me the very next day or to get the notes from someone in the class! THERE WILL BE NO EXTRA CREDIT THIS YEAR! I may have a few bonus questions on quizzes and exams but that is all. I do not have the time to correct extra credit packets. All of you will be taking the National Latin Exam the week of March 8th. All of you will be well prepared for this exam and should do very well come April. I look forward to a productive year in Latin! Mr. Monroe
