In addition there are several relevant textbooks in the library which may be consulted for additional background on the proposed course material: (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) Modern methods of Chemical Analysis - Pecsok, Shields (QD 75 P36 C.1) Instrumental Methods of Analysis - Willard, Merritt, Dean (QD 61 W67 C.1) Handbook of Modern Analytical Instruments - Khandpur (QD 53 K63 C.1) Principles of Instrumental Analysis - Skoog, West (QD 73 S56 C.1) Undergraduate Instrumental Analysis – Robinson, Skelly, Frame (QD 79 I5 R62) APPROXIMATE OUTLINE OF TOPICS TO BE COVERED: Principles of Spectroscopy Analysis Introduction to Chromatography Gas Chromatography Liquid Chromatography Molecular Mass Spectrometry UV/Visible Spectrophotometry Infrared Spectroscopy Atomic Absorption Atomic Emission Thermal Methods LABORATORY: (Instructor: J. Eng) (i) Laboratory sessions will be held on Wednesday from 8:00. A lab manual will be supplied to you via email in the first few days of the semester. A deposit for a laboratory key and equipment will also be requested. th (ii) Week 1 of the laboratory course is Wednesday 11 of January. Lockers will be assigned in this week and a laboratory outline will be provided. Course Evaluation: 2 Midterm examinations (50 minutes duration)* = 2 x 15 % Final Examination (2 hours duration)** = 30 % Laboratory = 40 % * Tentative dates for Midterms are: th (i) Wednesday 8 February. th (ii) Wednesday 15 March. ** The registrar will set the date of the final examination Chem 3410 Grades Schedule (Percentage required): A+ A AB+ B BC+ C C- = 90 – 100 = 86 - 89.9 = 80 - 85.9 = 77 – 79.9 = 73 – 76.9 = 70 – 72.9 = 63 – 69.9 = 57 – 62.9 = 50 – 56.9 F = below 50 Please Note: Normally failure to attend a Midterm exam will gain you a score of zero.
