Publications Officer
Job Description June 2011
Crohn’s and Colitis UK’s comprehensive range of publications are research based
and produced in consultation with patients, medical advisers and other health or
associated professionals. In 2009, Crohn's and Colitis UK became one of the first
organisations to achieve certification as an accredited provider of health information
under the Department of Health Information Standard accreditation scheme.
The Publications Officer will work with the Publications Manager to produce
quality information for patients, their families, and relevant health
professionals. This full-time post is based at the Crohn's and Colitis UK office
in St Albans. Occasional weekend and evening working is required.
Duties:
1. To maintain and develop processes to ensure that Crohn's and Colitis UK
remains an accredited information provider (National Information Standard
Accreditation Scheme/s). This includes:a. Implementing an ongoing timetable for the evaluation, review and
updating of Crohn's and Colitis UK’s existing publications.
b. Reviewing and updating existing Crohn's and Colitis UK publications
in line with Crohn's and Colitis UK’s policies and in consultation with
the Publications Manager, the Medical Advisory Board, relevant
Medical Advisers, health professionals, Committee members, Crohn's
and Colitis UK staff, patients, and other relevant specialists and
organisations when appropriate.
2. Maintaining a system for seeking and recording comments and feedback on
draft publications.
3. Maintaining an awareness of other IBD patient education material and
identifying gaps/possibilities for future Crohn's and Colitis UK publications.
4. Keeping Crohn's and Colitis UK staff, volunteers and members up-to-date
with Crohn's and Colitis UK publications.
5. Ensuring that Crohn's and Colitis UK publications are up-to-date on the
website.
6. To keep up-to-date with relevant information and research on Inflammatory
Bowel Disease, through reading medical and other professional journals and
attending conferences.
7. To write new information sheets and booklets in response to the needs of
information service users, in line with Crohn's and Colitis UK’s policies. This
involves:

a. Desk research to establish research base
b. Consultation with the Publications Manager, the Medical Advisory
Board, relevant Crohn's and Colitis UK Medical Advisers, health
professionals, Committee members, Crohn's and Colitis UK staff and
members, information users, and other relevant specialists and
organisations when appropriate.
8. To maintain, with the Publications Manager and Helplines Development
Manager, Crohn's and Colitis UK ’s collection of resource materials relating to
information and support for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. This involves:
a. Identifying appropriate research and other published reports or articles
for inclusion in the resource library
b. Information sharing with the information team and other staff and
volunteers as appropriate.
9. To attend the Annual General Meeting of the Association, and assist at any
other meetings or events as may be reasonably required by the Chief
Executive or the Director of Information and Support
10. To assist, when required, in covering the duties of other Crohn's and Colitis
UK members of staff during temporary periods of absence, and undertake
such other duties of an equivalent level of responsibility as may subsequently
be agreed with the Chief Executive or the Director of Information and Support.
