CCEA Draft Specification for Beauty Unit November 2011 Provide A Total Beauty Look Description of unit This unit is designed to give the learner an understanding and appreciation of make up techniques linked to different looks within the industry and through the development of skills the learner will display their creative design outcomes. The learner will cover the application of a wide range of makeup products to different skin tones and be aware of the influence of hair, fashion, design and the media industry to create a total look ie, make up and costume / dress. In this unit the learner will develop technical understanding and practical skills in the development of makeup and learn about individual and team work approaches for the use of make up skills linked to selection of costume / dress to compliment, in order to create a total finished beauty look. The learner will have the opportunity to learn basic and new creative industry skills or further develop existing interests in: Day make up/special occasion makeup Formal /bridal make up Evening make up Fashion trend make up Creative make up Fashion costumes Period costumes Specialised applications e.g., strip or individual false eyelashes to enhance total look The learner will need to maintain effective health, safety and hygiene, as well as personal appearance and good communication with client /peers. It will also 2 include health and safety regulations, minimising waste and using environmentally aware products. As part of the learning experience the learner will be responsible for evaluation on how effective the make up application was, which will inform future design and planning targets. Structure of the unit Learning outcomes: To achieve the unit the learner must: Section 1: Client Consultation. Section 2: Preparation of treatment area and client. Section 3: Creative application of make-up products and costume dressing to produce an over all look. Section 1: Client Consultation A consultation is carried out in a polite and professional manner. Effective communication is required and the client should be encouraged to ask questions so that the client’s needs are identified for the desired total look outcome. Clients who have contra-indications are referred to the instructor. Good standards of health and hygiene are displayed to minimize the risk of cross infection and will include the sterilisation of all equipment. Recommendations for the make-up treatment application are made to suit the client’s skin type, condition and suitable make-up for the occasion or event. The treatment plan and time constraints are agreed with the client and recorded accurately. 3 Section 2: Preparation of treatment area and client Preparation of the work area, self and client meet salon requirements with reference to materials, equipment and health and safety. Ensure that the client is in a comfortable and relaxed position for the treatment. The equipment, materials and products chosen meet the client’s needs and are positioned for ease and safety of use. Ensure all manufacturers’ instructions are followed for each product of application. Select and apply suitable cleansing, toning and moisturising products to prepare the clients skin before make up application, in order to achieve the agreed makeup look. Section 3: Creative application of make-up products and costume dressing to produce an overall beauty look Make-up products are applied in a methodical order and used in a cost effective manner to meet the desired make up style requirements. Make up products are applied professionally and effectively to create the agreed outcome, whether it is a day, special occasion etc, or a creative imaginative fashion make up look. Interact with client throughout the make up application to discuss stages of the make up application, for client reassurance and rapport. Confirm that the finished result meets the intended make up style, look and agreed treatment plan. Complete the make-up treatment and costume dressing in an acceptable time and provide suitable after recommendations for the client. 4 care advice and constructive What you need to learn Learners should be able to: Apply health and safety procedures relating to the application of make-up. Show a brief knowledge and awareness of the structure and function of the skin and take these into account when applying the treatment. Understand the importance of correctly preparing the skin for the intended make-up application. Analyse various skin types and conditions and take these into account when applying the make-up treatment. Study magazines, and use internet for ideas for the costume / dress. Analyse all evidence and put together a total look eg, formal dress and makeup to suit. Prepare the evidence and agreed with client /peer. Understand the importance of lighting for the occasion on which the makeup is to be worn. Understand the principles of contouring the face by the use of shading and highlighting. Identify types of powders, foundation, eye products, cheek products and lip products available and how to use them. Understand the importance of personal appearance and hygiene. Identify types of products that are suitable for various skin types. Recognise contra-indications and contra-actions. Identify current media trends in the application of make-up to develop the total look. Develop creative and artistic thinking by reflecting on current fashion and media trends. Use different types of communication i.e. verbal, non-verbal and written. Develop imagination to create a fashion, or music icon look. Use various types of tools and equipment and materials. 5 Identify problems that may occur and be able to deal with them or refer them to the instructor. Identify and use a range of products for the application of make-up and assisting products like false eyelashes or temporary tanning. Use make-up products safely and with the correct protective equipment. Ensure that the manufacturer’s instructions are followed carefully. Understand the importance of confidentiality. Dress and costume are comfortable and fitting to give an overall impact of the total look. Be able to discuss the need for minimising waste, recycling, the use of Fair Trade products and the use of organic products as opposed to chemical non-organic and the impact of all of these on the environment. Assessment strategies Evidence of learning can be attained from well planned practical tasks that provide the opportunity to demonstrate the range of knowledge and skills described in the unit content. Two assessments are required for this unit and examples of these could be applying make-up and creating two different looks on two different clients. Each assessment must be significantly different and reflect the various occasions and current fashion and media trends in the make-up industry. Practical work will be accompanied by written and oral questioning. Performance must be demonstrated consistently with the different examples of practical activity being carried out. Photographic evidence should be used to provide evidence with parental consent. 6 Performance could be demonstrated through collaboration with media, design, fashion and hair departments to create the total beauty look. E.g. Learners produce an event such as a Beauty or fashion show to showcase the acquired skills learned. Oral questioning and practical demonstrations are recommended because these are considered to be the most appropriate for this ‘hands on’ unit. The obligation to have a safe working environment includes the prevention of infection by sanitising laundry and working surfaces and all necessary equipment. It is extremely important that all relevant protective clothing is worn and all health and safety regulations and occupational standards are adhered to in all units. Assessment criteria Band C To be awarded marks in Band C, the learner will have demonstrated: Possession of a limited range of knowledge for the total beauty look, which will contribute to their role within a salon. Basic practical ability to carry out a consultation. Basic practical ability to cleanse, tone, moisturise and apply make-up products on a client, and basic imagination displayed for the presentation of client costume/dress. An understanding of their role within the salon. 7 Band B To be awarded marks in Band B, the learner will have demonstrated: The possession of a range of knowledge, which will contribute to their role within a salon; The practical ability to carry out a client consultation to an acceptable standard. The ability to demonstrate a reasonable cleansing, toning, moisturising and application of make-up products to an acceptable standard and a range of imagination displayed for the presentation of client costume/dress . An in-depth understanding of their role within a salon. Band A To be awarded marks in Band A, the learner will have demonstrated: The possession of an extensive range of knowledge, which will contribute to their role within a salon. The practical ability to carry out an in-depth client make-up consultation. The ability to apply and create a professional make-up application, which will include preparation of the skin with cleansing, toning and moisturizing, and excellent imagination for the presentation of client costume/dress The ability to provide thorough after-care advice to the client and give constructive recommendations to the client on make-up applications and products A thorough understanding of their role within the salon and expertise that could link to progression onto a NVQ programme or specialist make-up courses. 8 Guidance for teachers The make-up application unit needs to be delivered in a fully operational working environment with realistic clients from within the peer group. It should be delivered alongside theoretical knowledge such as anatomy and physiology of skin types and conditions and make-up product knowledge. Oral and written questions and assignments and class discussions should also be used for learners. Design boards could be used for collections of ideas and video recording for outcomes. Collaboration with other departments for team work initiatives for the learners. Learners must also be given the opportunity to explore job roles within this industry and a visiting speaker or visit to make up salons should be considered. The learners should be constantly made aware of the need to minimise and reduce wastage of products. They should also be made aware of the need for recycling and the use of environmentally friendly products such as organic makeup. 9
