COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of this course students will be able to:




Recognize and produce the sounds in the phonetic alphabet.
Use intonation, word and sentence stress when reading and speaking.
Comfortably engage in authentic conversations.
Monitor speech, which includes an increased ability to hear error and selfcorrect.
Lesson plan objectives
Each lesson will include:


Identification of pronunciation targets and practice used to reinforce skills.
Assessments preformed to measure student’s success and to inform
future lessons.
 Opportunities inside and outside of class to use newly acquired skills.
Along with textbook material, dialogues, songs, poems, plays, short stories,
games and computer assignments are used to meet objectives.

Consonant sounds, mouth positioning, getting to know you
conversations, needs assessments, identifying places around town where
we use English, self assessment
Lab assignment:
Consonant sounds, review vowels
Conversation: Greetings and reductions
Stops and Plosives (p,b,t,d,k,g), past tense endings, important endings
(page 179, Targeting Pronunciation) Group project- talking about
childhood experiences and childhood homes. Use the computer and make
a presentation in class.
Lab assignment: Review: Stops
Conversation: Where are you from
Fricatives (f,v,th) Rhythm: number of syllables and word stress, making
an appointment, perform the play (a doctor’s visit)
Lab assignment: fricatives
Conversation: Friendly dental care or So what’s the matter.

Fricatives (s,z,sh,js) Intonation, final endings with s &iz, talking about
daily, invitations, activities, cocktail party.

Conversation: Party time!
Nasals (m,n,ng) Rhythm, song- “Don’t go changing”, Dialog: customer
service- asking for help
Lab assignment: nasal sounds
Conversation: Hotel Reservation
Glides/ Semi-vowels (w,y) working with questions and finding
information, Questions around town, creating a conversation map of
places we go.
Lab assignment: glides
Conversation: Getting around town
Affricatives(ch,j) thought groups and oral presentation, talking about
jobs and dialog: job interview and starting your own business
Lab assignment: Affricatives
Quiz!
Vowels and consonants, (r and l) Targeting pronunciation- Get the
message (so to speak chapter 5) Telephone conversations
Lab Assignment: Liquids
Review vowel sounds
Conversation: answering machine, Emergency call or telephone
recording.
Review, Sentence stress and focus words, Dialog Keeping fit (chapter 6so to speak)
Lab assignment: TBA
Conversation: Healthy life style
Plans for the future, review, final assessment, goal setting and planning
Lab assignment; final quiz (turn this in to Darlene in office 302)
Materials: tape recorders, mirrors, sound charts, computer
Primary text: ESL pronunciation lessons vol. 8, So to Speak vol 1 and 2
