Chapter 4
. This chapter will discuss 4 of the ancient empires (Nubian/Kush, Assyrian, Persian, and Qin).
You will be required to know the information from each section for a unit test. While reading
each section pay special attention to the questions listed below. It helps to know what you are
looking for prior to reading the material.
The Egyptian and Nubian Empires (Page 89)
1. Briefly describe the events that took place in Egypt from 1640 B.C to 1570 B.C. (Hint:
answer found on page 89)
2. Describe how the New Kingdom strengthened Egypt. (Hint: answers on pages 90-91)
3. Explain how the Egyptian Empire declined. (Hint: answers on pages 91-92)
4. Explain how Nubia established its own Kushite dynasty on the throne of Egypt (Hint: be
sure to talk about location, interaction, as well as goods and ideas pg. 92-93)
5. Explain why the Kushite royal family moved south to Meroe (Pg. 94)
The Assyrian Empire
1. Explain how the Assyrian Empire became a mighty military machine. (Hint: Be sure to
include their organization and conquests)
2. Explain how the Empire was able to expand. (Hint: Culture and government)
3. Explain how the Assyrian Empire declined and eventually fell. (Hint: pages 97-98)
The Persian Empire
1. Explain how Persia was able to become an empire. (Hint: Pg. 99-100)
2. Explain how Persia ruled their territories by summarizing Persian control and local
government. (Hint: Provinces and Satraps should be included in this summary)
3. Describe the Persian Legacy. (Hint: Teachings and Political Order)
The Unification of China
1. Explain how Confucius and his social order helped to restore social order, harmony, as
well as respect for authority in China. (Hint: Page 104-105)
2. Briefly explain the Chinese ethical system of Daoism. (Hint: Pages 105-106)
3. Briefly explain the Chinese ethical system of Legalism. (Hint: Pages 105-106)
4. Which system do you feel would work best, why?
5. Explain how the Qin Dynasty unified China. (Hint: Be sure to talk about centralization
and the Great Wall as well as significant emperors)
6. Explain how the Qin Dynasty inevitably fell.
