Programs for Graduates with Master Degree in Sociology

I. Objectives
1. This faculty aims at training advanced professionals and practical talents with profound Marxist
theoretical knowledge and a thorough development in personalities, diligence, physical education. It is
required that postgraduates have elaborate and systematic knowledge in sociology and have a good
command of foreign language. After graduation the postgraduates can work as theory advocators and
perform practical work in higher education establishments, academic research institutes, government
organizations and press publishing houses, etc.
II. Tendency
1. Study of social development and modernization
Research and develop the basic theories and method about sociology, discuss realistic issues on the
Chinese social development and modernization

Research of community and city
The research of community and city is the main branch of sociology. The research stresses on the
research about the Chinese and western theories of community and city, the development of community
and urbanization, and the organize construction of the urban community. Research the relationship between
the community and urban society, discuss the process , character and laws of the community and urban
development from both macro and micro angles.
3. Social psychology
This research orientation aims at training postgraduates with the knowledge and skill of
analyzing social people’s psychological laws so as to correctly explain the crucial social psychological
phenomenon during the social development.
4. Social work and social administrative research
Postgraduates can obtain the frontier-field knowledge and advanced theories on the social welfare
service and social work and so on through studying related theories and administration.
5. Social sex research

Research social sex theories and analyze the social layers of sex, and using the concept of social sex
to research the female sex’s situation in society and family.
III. Duration of study
Full-time postgraduates are required to normally study for three years in length. Full-time master
graduates who are outstanding can be allowed to graduate one year ahead. The postgraduates are required
to fulfill the total credits during the former three terms, and carry out graduation dissertation devising a
subject、 starting report and writing and defense.
IV. Total credits
For the postgraduates, 31 credits are required, of which are compulsory 19credits and selective 12
credits.

Supplementary courses, Postgraduates with the same-level degree or non-major degree are
required to select social statistics and history of western sociology which are for college students. The
results are recorded in the personal files with no credits.
Requirements for frontier- field academic lectures
The lectures in the faculty mainly deal with discussions surrounding the latest issues and hot topics in
the development of the field. Postgraduates should have a good command of the academic tendency of the
day in order to actively participate in the study of the latest issues or major problems and cultivate the
ability of independent thinking and academic researching. Postgraduates are required to give individual
lectures for not less than two times. After the lecture, postgraduates should write one paper with original
views on the latest academic tendency. The paper is the assessment accordance.
VI. Mid-term assessments
Our faculty performs mid-term assessments on postgraduates in accordance with the postgraduate
regulation of Shandong University.
VII. Scientific research and degree dissertation
1. Dissertation topics should have theoretical value or realistic meaning, reflect certain academic
original creation. It is performed normally at the third semester.

2. Before writing the dissertation officially, the postgraduates should offer elaborate starting report,
explaining the meaning of the dissertation devising, the research situation at home and abroad, basic points
and thinking mode of writing. Dissertation starting report normally is performed at the first month of the
fourth semester.
3. Degree dissertation must be completed by the postgraduate independently with the guidance of tutor.
The dissertation should have definite evidences, full and accurate data, fluent speech, tight logic, reaching
the level higher than the publication in the province-class academic journal. The dissertation should obey
the academic discipline of Shandong University that must mark out when quoting others’ view.
4. To insure the quality of the dissertation, the writing time should not be less than one year, about
40,000 words are suitable.
VIII、Practice
It is required that the postgraduates go for practice of teaching, researching
and social investigation in accordance with the dissertation writing.
