National Workshop on Building Digital Libraries Application of DSpace April 22-25, 2006 Organized by DELNET Developing Library Network New Delhi Venue DELNET-Developing Library Network JNU Campus, Nelson Mandela Road Vasant Kunj, New Delhi-110070 The Workshop: Libraries around the world are getting modernized using the latest IT applications and digitization of local and non-copyrighted collections in Libraries and Information Centres is becoming one of latest and priority jobs. Digitisation of books and textual documents is not just a mechanical job. Several applications are involved in the conversion of textual and pictorial documents into digital documents. Due care has to be taken to the storage and access of such digital resources using international standards. Digital documents should be accessible now and accessible later. Digital resources should get archived and accessed in greater detail. A number of free software are available for developing digital libraries. Dspace (http://www.dspace.org) is one of the most popular software available. It has been developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace incorporates digital asset management system and helps create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content. Dspace is adaptable to various needs of Libraries and Informatiion Centres and maintains in-built interoperability programs for application between various systems. It adheres to international standards for metadata. This workshop is planned to support the growing interests of LIS professionals working in Libraries and Information Centres in Developing Digital Libraries using DSpace. LDL: Librarians' Digital Library is the outcome of successful launching of a Digital Library using the Dspace by DRTC ( https://drtc.isibang.ac.in ). DSpace: DSpace is an open http://www.dspace.org source software and is freely downloadable from Submission facility allows scientists and researchers to upload digital documents from anywhere in the world Workflow feature allows moderation of the submitted documents Uses persistent handles Conforms to the standards like Dublin Core and OAI-PMH v.2.0 Security can be built at various levels to effect restricted access Indian Language based digital libraries can be built as it conforms to the UNICODE standard The Dspace Software has been chosen as a Digital Library software keeping in view its advanced features. Besides lectures, hands-on-experience will be given to every individual in developing a digital library in any type of Library or an Information Centre. Objectives: 1. To provide background knowledge of the digital library and its related concepts 2. To make the participant be able to start a Digital Library 3. To offer hands on experience in using Dspace Software The topics to be covered in the Workshop: 1. Overview of DSpace 2. Installation of DSpace 3. DSpace Users: Anonymous, Members & Authors 4. Lucene Search Engine 5. DSpace Administration 6. Dublin Core 7. OAI-PMH 8. Persistent Handles 9. DSpace Customization 10. Unicode and Indian Languages The working sessions include lectures, demonstrations and practices on the topics mentioned above.
