Collagen-based Biomaterials for Tendon Repair - NFB

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed term contract position in
tendon repair. The successful applicant must have spent at least 1 year (full-time equivalent) prior
to start date at NUI Galway. The successful candidate will be exchanged to Vornia Ltd for 12
months to work on a tendon repair project funded under the FP7 People Programme’s Industry
Academia (IAPP) scheme. Following the 12 months exchange period, the successful candidate
may be required to spend a period up to 12 months at the Network of Excellence for Functional
Biomaterials (NFB) at National University of Ireland, Galway. Vornia Ltd is a start-up company in
the expanding biomaterials field. The company provides design, development and fabrication
services for customised biomaterial solutions for the medical device and pharmaceutical industry.
Person Specifications:
The ideal candidate should have:
(a) Proven experience in collagen based biomaterials;
(b) Proven experience in in vitro (protein analysis, gene expression, cell isolation and
characterisation) and in vivo (small animal models, histology, immunocytochemistry)
evaluation of biomaterials;
(c) A PhD in biomaterials / tissue engineering disciplines;
(d) A minimum of five first author research publications in high impact factor journals, coauthorship in other published works and conference participation;
(e) Hands-on experience in design, execution and recording of scientific experiments;
(f) Excellent interpersonal skills;
(g) Attention to detail, ability to respond to tight deadlines; and an excellent work ethic.
