FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: February 20, 2014 Randall Hartzog Theatre Memphis, Director of Marketing and Communications rhartzog@theatrememphis.org 901.682.8601 Theatre Memphis Announces 2014-15 Season Theatre Memphis has made its play selections for the 2014-15 season and they include a variety of entertainment that touches many bases. Featuring musicals, comedy, drama, classics and new work, the season offers options to Memphis patrons. The 411 seat Lohrey Stage will begin the season with The Addams Family, a musical adaptation of the wonderfully weird and beloved cartoon family created by Charles Addams. Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester and more come to devilish life in the bright and comically macabre new musical that will be a regional premiere. The next production on the Lohrey Stage will be a timeless story of New York society and status. The Heiress, recently revived on Broadway, follows a controlled, shy young woman who is suddenly exposed to the possibilities of a hopeful life through a handsome suitor. Of Mice and Men will next bring on a haunting display of the unlikely and protective friendship of migrant workers in the Great Depression as they strive for their California and American dreams. Next on the Lohrey Stage is a real coup for Theatre Memphis, one of the national premieres of the highly awarded and entertaining The Boy from Oz. Featuring original songs made popular by night club and recording star Peter Allen, this ‘life of” musical tells his story. From his intro act for Judy Garland and his marriage to her daughter, Liza, to the popular musical hits performed that will keep you smiling. Versatile TM stage veteran Rob Hanford will portray Allen. A classic American comedy graces the stage in the season line up with The Philadelphia Story. A sophisticated yet zany satire, this look at a socialite wedding involves an ex-husband and national news coverage that keeps you wondering who will walk down the aisle. The season finale on the Lohrey Stage is the musical Anything Goes. A shining example of classic musical theatre and epic tap dancing, this Cole Porter-scored juggernaut has a madcap book and an unexpected and wonderfully happy ending. And of course, the family favorite, A Christmas Carol, will be performed as a special holiday offering in December for the 37th consecutive year at Theatre Memphis. The Next Stage season includes The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers. Funny as it is touching, 12-year-old tomboy Frankie is coming of age and in her troubled adolescence she is befriended by a loving confidante of a housekeeper. This play takes on a mid-century look at attitudes on racial and sexual identity that has lessons that can be applied to society today. Tintypes comes up next as a musical romp and journey through the turn of the 20th century with rousing scores from George M. Cohan, John Philip Sousa, Scott Joplin and Victor Herbert. This show brings a wonderful blend of patriotic, ragtime, romantic and popular tunes from The Great American Songbook. Following in the Next Stage will be a Tony Award-winning Best Play, Copenhagen. Sometimes funny and sometimes serious, the plot ingeniously presents two men in the afterlife debating the controversial and very public debate about science and morality they had when they were alive. Scheduled next to follow in the black box theatre is another regional premiere and new work, Rapture, Blister, Burn. Decades after college, friends reconnect only to discover they desperately want each other’s current life. With blazing wit, this comedy takes a look at family, career, romance and life decisions.
