INDIANA HISTORICAL SOCIETY ARCHIVES AND LIBRARY JOB TITLE: Collections Assistant, Manuscript and Visual DEPARTMENT: Archives and Library FLSA STATUS & PAY GRADE: Nonexempt A REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Director, Collections Management EMPLOYEES SUPERVISED: N/A FULL TIME/PART TIME: Temporary, Part Time Nature of work: Assist staff of Manuscript and Visual Collections Department in the processing of collections. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Box and folder collections as requested by department members. 2. Perform light conservation work. 3. Process and write collection description for new or reprocessed collections. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: 1. Proven research and communication skills and an understanding of or ability to learn research library practices and procedures. 2. General knowledge of standard cataloging practices and principles under Library of Congress Classification System. 3. Ability to prioritize and organize tasks, meet specific deadlines, and follow assignments through to completion. 4. Excellent computer skills; proficient with Microsoft Office suite as well as basic office equipment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical Movement – Stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching in order to reach and pick up items Strength – Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds Manual Dexterity – Ability to handle fragile items with care Wrist and Visual Stamina – Ability to type and focus on a computer screen for prolonged periods of time (Incumbent must be able to meet physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations. Reasonable request of accommodation is to be determined by IHS on a case-by-case basis, in accordance with ADA guidelines.) QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM: Bachelor’s degree in History, Public History, Library Information Sciences, or related field. PREFERRED: An awareness of or interest in Indiana History. Work experience in a library, archives, or museum setting. Part-time This position is limited to 15 hours/week and is a temporary position for up to 3 years. Pay is $12/hour.
