Attention: HR Department RE: Job Code 410-609 PO Box 239 Astoria, OR 97103 Job Description Job Purpose: The Medical Assistant (Certified) will perform duties to assist the Center providers in the delivery of primary medical care as needed. The Medical Assistant (Certified) receives, greets and prepares patients for medical examinations or procedures. The Medical Assistant (Certified) aides the center providers in the treatment of patients in accordance with established guidelines. Duties: • Prepares patients for provider, including greeting patients, patient check in and check out, questioning patients as to problems, recording chief complaint on chart, getting vital signs and other lab work as indicated, and prepares patients for individual treatment and appropriate examinations. • Insures that ill patients remain comfortable until seen by a provider. • Assists providers in healthcare activities, performance of diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. • Prepares orders and maintains stock of appropriate supplies. • Performs other necessary duties as required by the administrative or clinical directors to meet the goal of providing primary healthcare services. • Participates in daily team huddle with assigned provider. • Collects viable specimens from the clinic’s patients, performs all in-house testing, prepares specimens/records for outside lab procedures and records lab results. • Records results of all blood samples, cultures, EKGs, etc., in the patient charts. • Performs routine laboratory procedures, i.e., urinalysis, cultures, completing appropriate forms and assisting providers with examination and diagnostic routines. • Assists in the conducting of health education activities as needed. • Performs other necessary duties as required by the administrative and clinical directors to meet the goal of providing primary healthcare services. • Gives injections only under the direct medical supervision of the site provider and sets up exam rooms for various treatments, assisting with suturing and any emergency patients. • Completes all records and reports as assigned. • Participates in the community health center’s quality assurance activities and performs duties in accordance with applicable standards. • Develops and maintains skills by seeking consultation from appropriate sources. • Ensures an appropriate environment for delivery of healthcare by assisting, in general, with maintenance and housekeeping i.e., maintaining equipment, locking and securing areas and maintaining work areas in a clean, safe and orderly fashion. • Attends all clinical updates and trainings. • Obtains test results and referral reports and reports date directly to provider. • Facilitates in training new employees. • Performs all other duties as assigned. Skills/Attributes: • Ability to proficiently and accurately read and write in English. • Excellent telephone, communication and interviewing skills. • Proficient computer skills; ability to use multiple types of programs i.e., word processing, electronic health record. • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and perform efficiently and effectively in a stressful environment. • Ability to work in fast-paced setting. • Empathy and understanding of patients with special needs. • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Qualifications: • High School graduate with two-year’s experience in a primary medical care setting and/or completion of a medical assistant’s educational program at an accredited school, required. • Certification in Medical Assistant Technology, required. • Demonstrates ability to deal with the public, required. • Ability to learn to perform laboratory tests and willingness to assist other staff as necessary, required. • Ability to make accurate technical and visual observations of patients and to record same in a neat and legible order, required. • Ability to relate with warmth and effectiveness to patients and staff of the health center, required. • Current CPR certification required (CFHC will provide if needed). • Must be able to pass national background check and drug screen.
