The fire, reported by neighbours at 3:45 am, was believed to have begun around 3:30 am and brought under control by the Metropolitan Fire Service by 4:30 am. Amongst the damages were 20 computers and six classrooms, two of which were science laboratories and one a storeroom containing science equipment. Fire services reported no injuries and believed no one was on the premises at the time if the fire. Due to suspicious circumstances, fire services are suspecting arson. Shocked School Principal, Ms Louisa Mancini, has expressed disbelief and regrets the negative effects the fire will have on her senior students in particular. Ms Mancini has declared a school closure for the remainder of the week though is positive the school will manage and classes will resume next Monday with the help and support of the local community. A drastic amount of schoolwork was lost in the fire and Ms Mancini was devastated to find the Year 10 major art projects were amongst it. Education Minister, Ms Philippa Paterson, has announced an increase in school security after declaring the Magill Secondary College fire takes the South Australian fire toll to five schools in the past three months. Ms Paterson announced that Magill Secondary School would be on the list of schools eligible for overnight surveillance. Education Department spokesman, Mr Darren Chen, has claimed that repair work to the Magill School is set to begin next Monday with the schools re-opening. “The less damaged classrooms should be ready for use within a week or two”, Mr Chen said. Radio Story: A fire has caused $1.2 million worth of damages to Magill Secondary School this morning. The ten-day event will showcase some of Adelaide’s greatest sporting complexes with the 56 sports being held at multiple locations including Santos Stadium, SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre and the Super-dome track. The opening ceremony is set to be held at the City of Adelaide Games Village, which will be constructed in Adelaide’s CBD for the opening on the 7th of October. Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister, Tom Kenyon, has urged all sports men and women across the State to sign up as he anticipates more than 14,000 participants and supporters from all over the globe. Mr Kenyon has expressed his appreciation for the opportunity that hosting the games gives South Australia to platform the State’s sporting community and prove our ability to compete amongst sports men and women across the world. “I would like to encourage every one to help South Australia flex its collective muscle and ensure we’re seen as a dominant force at this event here on our home soil”, Mr Kenyon said in hope of igniting State pride. The Games open a window of opportunity for sports participants beyond their twenties as Mr Kenyon said, “The Masters Games are a fantastic initiative, providing an opportunity for people over the age of 30 to participate, regardless of background or ability”. A special registration category, referred to as “accompanying person”, is also available to those wishing to participate in festivities without entering sporting competitions.
