8. Brief description of position’s responsibilities:
The head of virology leads and directs the plant virology work at AVRDC Headquarters and
collaborates with local staff at the AVRDC Regional Centers. This includes monitoring current
and emerging virus diseases of vegetables, fundamental research on virus identification,
characterization and diagnosis, as well as research on virus ecology, epidemiology and control
strategies. It also includes support to genetic resources and breeding groups through development
of robust pathogenicity screening techniques and their use in screening germplasm accessions,
breeders’ lines and segregating/mapping populations for resistance. The role also involves
supervising, mentoring and training staff and other trainees associated with the Headquarters and
the Regional Centers.

Experience of training and teaching from the development and delivery of extension and training
materials for resource-poor farmers through to MSc and PhD student mentoring, supervision and
lecturing.
Knowledge of food safety and quality assurance systems for export horticultural growers
(including the design and management of product and input traceability systems) to meet the
requirements of EU Food Law, EUREPGAP and specific retailer protocols for access to EU
markets.
