YEAR 7 SCIENCE – ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS AND GENERATION
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES PROJECT
DUE DATE: Tuesday 16 August 2011
mission:Save our city!
Your mission is to accept an urgent invitation from the Premier of Victoria, Sunny Sparks, to SAVE OUR CITY! Your state needs you.
Here in the year 2030, our coal resources are severely depleted and we have too many greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Our city
consumes enormous amounts of electricity and we need a new source of electricity or we will be left in the dark. The Government is seeking
research teams to consider alternatives to coal-fi red power stations and to put forward a proposal for the best solution to our energy crisis.
You may explore options like: solar cells, nuclear power, geothermal energy, wind turbines, biomass, tidal power, gas power, hydroelectric
power, wind power or a solar tower.
Using the internet and other resources, you need to list the advantages and disadvantages of each, and consider which would be the best for
the state that we live in. Take into account facts such as noise, safety, air pollution and appearance.
When you have made your choice, you need to present your proposal to your class. In your report, you also need to explain:
the meaning of the terms circuit, current and voltage
how electricity is converted into other forms of energy in our homes (giving some examples)
how your chosen power supply operates.
Find on a map an actual location for this power station. Explain how you will convince the local community to agree to your plan. After
completing your mission, write an evaluation about how you think you performed in your research team. Also comment upon the individual
strengths that were brought into your team by the other members of your group.
