Situated in a former seed warehouse in Sleaford, a Lincolnshire market town, the Centre boasts five exciting exhibition spaces; a vibrant events programme; an innovative craft shop; a licensed café and a roof-top viewing balcony. Exhibiting work of an international standard, we present up to 20 exhibitions a year and have a national touring programme as part of our portfolio of activity. The post of Gallery Assistant will suit those hoping to start or consolidate their career in the gallery/museum sector. It will provide a broad overview of working within a contemporary exhibition venue from learning how to handle, install and present artworks and develop exhibitions, through to liaising with artists/members of the public and marketing exhibitions. JOB DESCRIPTION Post: GALLERY ASSISTANT Responsible to: Exhibitions Manager Responsible for: - Hours of work: 30 hours/4 days per week Friday to Monday Salary: £10,140 per annum - JOB PURPOSE: To provide gallery invigilation delivering a high quality customer service to enrich the visitor experience at The National Centre for Craft & Design. To provide administrative support to the wider exhibitions team contributing to the development of the exhibitions programme KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: 1. Gallery set up/maintenance To be responsible for setting up the roof gallery space each morning before the Centre and exhibitions open to the public To ensure all mechanical and electronic elements are in good working order; that exhibits remain secure; that the gallery is clean and well presented; that all spot lights are working; and hand outs, questionnaires, interactive materials and promotional marketing is well stocked 2. Invigilation/customer service/audience development To provide a high quality customer service enriching the visitor experience and ensuring that both the exhibits and members of the public remain safe at all times To actively invigilate the Roof Gallery (and or Main Gallery) to ensure both the exhibits, and the members of the public remain safe at all times To actively engage visitors in conversation offering details about forthcoming special events and responding to any exhibition queries 3. Installation facilitation To be involved in all elements of exhibition installation for the galleries including: gallery/plinth preparation and maintenance; condition checking, wrapping and packing exhibitions; laying out exhibits and creating displays; lighting and audio visual To ensure general and specialist materials are purchased in time for changeover periods and items are stocked in an easy to find and ordered manner To monitor condition of AV equipment and maintain/repair where required To monitor the appropriateness of the exhibition tools and source replacements (with advise from technician) and new items to further improve working conditions 4. Administration To assist with developing supporting material for exhibitions including graphic displays and interpretation; condition checking and organising transport To support the Head of Exhibitions and Exhibitions Manager with general departmental administration including corresponding with artists and galleries by letter, email and telephone; compiling spread sheets, data entry etc To research audience groups, exhibitors and other areas via the web and other appropriate methods To support the wider team and contributing ideas for future special events programmes 5. Marketing To support the marketing team contributing to social media profiles To carry out audience research and gather feedback and visitor demographic information To collate evaluation information and produce monthly reports to present to the wider team 6. Car Allowance A mileage allowance of £0.20 for diesel and £0.24 for petrol per mile will be reimbursed for all travel carried out for work purposes. Office Hours 30 hours per week working 9.15am to 5.15pm Friday to Monday Holidays The annual holiday entitlement is 22.5 days per year. This attracts an annual increment. Sickness Sickness absence will not be paid for first 3 days of absence; there on entitlement to sick pay will be in accordance with the appropriate rate of Statutory Sick Pay.
