New exhibition by Gabriel Dawe launches at The National Centre for Craft and Design. 16 February 2016: This winter, Mexican born artist Gabriel Dawe will showcase his latest large-scale art installation in the Main Gallery of The National Centre for Craft and Design (NCCD), Sleaford, Lincolnshire – the largest main gallery space in the country. Simultaneously, the NCCD will host two further exhibitions in the adjacent galleries. While The Roof Gallery will display a collection of Brazilian inspired works entitled ‘Jewels from Brazil’, the Window Space will feature pieces by Victoria Topping. All three exhibitions will be on display until January 2012. With the display title of ‘Materialising the Structure of Light’, Gabriel Dawe’s exhibition centres around a new commission from the artist’s Plexus series and represents the largest structure that Dawe has ever attempted. The installation transforms the gallery space, using giant veils of shimmering colour and line that stretch from floor to ceiling to create an immersive environment for visitors to walk through, experience and contemplate. ‘Jewels from Brazil’, in the centre’s Roof Gallery, provides a fascinating meditation on the way that the natural resources of the South American country have been utilised in manufacture by jewellery designers, creating new interactions between the object and the body. 17 participant artists contribute work, offering a diverse and creative snapshot of the progressive innovation of Brazilian design. In the Window Space, Victoria Topping injects a sense of rhythm and sound with her ‘Experiments in Shape & Interplanetary Music’, a series of musically inspired graphic artworks that celebrate an eclectic mixture of subject matter and visual paraphernalia. The pieces featured are created using a combination of computer software and traditional drawing techniques, mixing geometric shapes with base speakers and skulls with textile samples to generate an effect at once other-worldly and oddly familiar. Jayne Olney, Marketing and Communications Manager at the NCCD, comments: “We’re really excited to present these three exhibitions for the winter season, and particularly to showcase the work of an artist of such international prominence as Gabriel Dawe. Here at the NCCD, we pride ourselves on being able to display the work of the most innovative, challenging and accomplished craft and design artists in the country. Over the years we have presented an incredible array of cutting edge art, craft and design, and this year’s exhibitions fit comfortably into that esteemed lineage. We really hope that people from across the country take the chance to view some fantastic work.” For more information on The National Centre for Craft and Design please visit http://www.nationalcraftanddesign.org.uk/ or telephone 01529 308710 -ENDSNotes to the Editor: The National Centre for Craft and Design sits at the heart of the market town of Sleaford, Lincolnshire in the pleasant riverside setting of Navigation Wharf.
