Introduction
Fyko Chemicals Limited was founded as a limited liability company and its primary activities are;
production of Sodium hypochlorite solution from addition of liquefied chlorine gas to sodium hydroxide
solution topped up with distilled water, supply and distribution of industrial chemicals, detergents,
swimming pool chemicals and water treatment chemicals. We emphasize after sales service and are
always ready to discuss the needs of potential customers before purchase. The company has mainly
dealt in bulk sales to distributers but have now decided to enter the retail market.To date, the
company is an equal opportunity employer of 12 full time staff. The production of Sodium Hypochlorite
is not labour intensive but on entry to the retail market the number of staff would have to be increased
considerably. The directors of the company are Dr. Keith Ormand, Mr. Malcolm MacDonald and Mr Alan
Stobbart.
Fyko Chemicals Limited has proved itself to be the most diverse and technically unique company in the
industrial chemicals market.

Establishment
The company’s turnover grew by 30% in the last financial year due to aggressive marketing of Sodium
Hypochlorite solution. The company’s trading division which deals in industrial and water treatment
chemicals, swimming pool chemicals etc… offers a large potential for exploitation. The company
however, has grown its export business in Tanzania, Uganda and Congo DR and these remain key
growth areas.The introduction of products to the retail market such as Bleach, Dishwashing Paste,
Washing up Liquid, Hand Cream, Shampoo, Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Oven Cleaner, General Surface
Cleaner, Scouring Powder, Bar Soap, Engine Cleaner, Battery Acid, Deionised Water will greatly boost
the companies turnover.
Fyko Chemicals Limited is located in Babadogo Road 1off the Thika Highway.

Competition
There are two primary areas of competition for Fyko i.e. detergents and swimming pool chemicals.
When we enter the retail market we will have numerous competitors but we fell that the quality of our
products is such that we will be highly successful.
(i)
Detergents
There are numerous players in housekeeping detergent market ranging from international companies
to small "jua kali" traders. We hold a small share approximately 1% in the housekeeping detergents
section; with introduction prospects of Blue Apples hand cream to the retail market, we have the
prospects of growing bigger to 50% of the market.
The hand cream is manufactured and distributed by ourselves though there is existence of many
foreign competitors in this field.
(ii)
Swimming Pool Chemicals
Though still new in this section we are growing considerably large by managing to supply chemicals
and offer technical advice to some of the public and institution swimming pools within Nairobi and its
environs. We have made a niche in this business due to our flexibility to embrace changes in
technology.

Special Services
We work in conjunction with Chemigas Limited, a registered LPG emergency contractor for Kenya Shell
and Mobil Oil (K) limited to distribute LPG and other industrial gases to Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.

Future Prospects
With entry into the retail market, the company could easily double its turn-over in less than six months
and go for sole agency for distributorship of Chlorine gas across East Africa giving room to rise to
international levels.

Listed below are some of the technical breaks through achieved by Fyko Chemicals Limited:  Setting up a plant for production of Sodium hypochlorite solution from chlorine gas balances
in cylinders eliminating gas lose and pollution to the environment.
 Financing the installation, commissioning of oxygen – acetylene manufacturing plant at our
sister company in Mwanza, Tanzania.
 Large scale producers of quality Sodium Hypochlorite solution at high concentration used in
the horticulture industry to preserve the flowers.
