Organic Chemical Assignment Over the past century, 1000’s of new organic chemicals have been created that previously never existed. Many of these chemicals have been extremely beneficial. Unfortunately, despite there usefulness, some chemicals have had profound environmental and health consequences. One such chemical was the wonder chlorinated hydrocarbons known as CFC’s or chlorinated fluorocarbons. These chemical contained a carbon or carbons with several chlorine and fluorine atoms attached. These chemicals had low melting points, were excellent solvents and had limited reactivity. They were used in aerosol containers, as cleaning fluids for computer equipment and as a main coolant in air conditioners. Only in the late 70’s and early 80’s did we discover that these chemicals when released into the environment, deplete the ozone layer. In this assignment, you are to answer ONE of the following questions below taken from your text. Each of these questions will require some degree of research. You will be required to answer the question in full using a proper reference section. The question should be first retyped and then answered. Your answer(s) (some of the questions have multiple parts) should be double-spaced, 12 point font – proper headings and figures where appropriate. On average, the entire question should ideally take 2 pages double-spaced typed to answer. Some students will likely choose the same question, however each student is responsible for submitting there OWN assignment – this is NOT a group project. Duplication will result in a mark of ZERO. Use at least three different references to help answer your question See Over The assignment is due on Thursday September 29th ( no extensions please). Each question is worth the same mark – each question will be evaluated differently due to the nature of the question, however, all questions will have the same overall assigned value. This is a MAKING CONNECTIONS evaluation and will be included in this section of course evaluation. Regardless of the question, each will evaluated based upon detail of answer and research content. You will also be evaluated on the quality of your response. Make sure that you proofread your answer (spelling and grammar) before submission. Where possible, draw out chemical structures using CHEM DRAW on the L drive of the computer network. Numerous linking material can be found at www.science.nelson.com
