Tuesday, November 8, 2011; Day 60
Focused Standard:
ESS.8.6.4 Conduct investigations to identify the variables within volcanoes that cause different types of
eruptions
Materials: vinegar, food coloring, baking soda, eye droppers, metal trays
Instructional Strategies:
Lab Activity:
On a tray, place a pile of baking soda. Mix vinegar + a few drops of food coloring in a cup. Give the kids
an eyedropper. Have them fill it with vinegar, squeeze onto the baking soda and watch mini volcanoes
erupt!
First students will hypothesize what they think will happen when they drop the food coloring/vinegar
solution onto the baking soda. Students will describe the “mini” eruptions of the volcanoes in their science
journals and document whether their hypothesis was correct.
Wednesday, November 9, 2011; Day 61
Focused Standard:
ESS.8.6.11 Investigate and map patterns of earthquake and volcanic activity
Instructional Strategies:
*locate positions on map containing active volcanoes and earthquakes
*investigate and map patterns of earthquake and volcanic activity
