6th Grade Science & Social Studies Ms. Cato & Ms. Debow Date: November 7-11, 2011(Week 13; Days 59-63) Monday, November 7, 2011; Day 59 Focused Standard: ESS.8.6.7 Connect short-term changes in climate with volcanic activity Instructional Strategies: http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/7y.html http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/Volcano/ http://www.geology.sdsu.edu/how_volcanoes_work/climate_effects.html Vocabulary: aerosols, short-term climate Social Studies: Focused Standard: G.3.6.5 Describe the physical processes that produce renewable and nonrenewable resources Instructional Strategies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_energy http://www.neok12.com/Natural-Resources.htm Tuesday, November 8, 2011; Day 60 Focused Standard: ESS.8.6.4 Conduct investigations to identify the variables within volcanoes that cause different types of eruptions Materials: vinegar, food coloring, baking soda, eye droppers, metal trays Instructional Strategies: Lab Activity: On a tray, place a pile of baking soda. Mix vinegar + a few drops of food coloring in a cup. Give the kids an eyedropper. Have them fill it with vinegar, squeeze onto the baking soda and watch mini volcanoes erupt! First students will hypothesize what they think will happen when they drop the food coloring/vinegar solution onto the baking soda. Students will describe the “mini” eruptions of the volcanoes in their science journals and document whether their hypothesis was correct. Wednesday, November 9, 2011; Day 61 Focused Standard: ESS.8.6.11 Investigate and map patterns of earthquake and volcanic activity Instructional Strategies: *locate positions on map containing active volcanoes and earthquakes *investigate and map patterns of earthquake and volcanic activity http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/find.htm (world atlas online) http://tsunami.geo.ed.ac.uk/local-bin/quakes/mapscript/home.pl http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ (list of current and recent earthquake activity) http://earthquake.usgs.gov/ http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/plate_tectonics/rift_man.php https://ethemes.missouri.edu/themes/307?locale=en%3F Vocabulary: map, patterns, earthquake activity, volcanic activity Social Studies: Focused Standard: G.3.6.5 Describe the physical processes that produce renewable and nonrenewable resources Instructional Strategies: http://www.eco-pros.com/renewableresources.htm http://www.teachervision.fen.com/tv/printables/ca/energysourcesworksheet_key.pdf Thursday, November 10, 2011; Day 62 Focused Standard: ESS.8.6.11 Investigate and map patterns of earthquake and volcanic activity Instructional Strategies: Plate Tectonics TG http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/find.htm (world atlas online) http://cs.explorelearning.com/materials/PlateTectonicsSE.pdf http://www.explorelearning.com/index.cfm?method=cResource.dspView&ResourceID=446#assessment Questions http://www.learner.org/interactives/volcanoes/movies/movies3.html https://ethemes.missouri.edu/themes/307?locale=en%3F Vocabulary: map, patterns, earthquake activity, volcanic activity Friday, November 4, 2011; Day 58 Focused Standard: ESS8.6.12 Locate earthquake belts on Earth:Mediterranean–Trans–Asiatic,Circum–Pacific (Ring of Fire) Instructional Strategies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ring_of_Fire http://www.2747.com/2747/world/city/earthquake.htm http://earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/zones/index-eng.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Seismic_Zone Social Studies: Focused Standard: G.3.6.6 Describe ways in which technology influences capacity to modify the physical environment Instructional Strategies: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/standards/14/index.html http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/games/actiongames/recycle-roundup/
