START DATE: 22nd May 2015
DEADLINE: 25th June 2015
Science in the News
What will I learn?
Science is not just something that happens in laboratories.
Science has a huge impact on our everyday lives.
You will become an expert in one, two or three current scientific news
stories.
What do I need to do?
1. Watch some news programs on TV and/or look at a few newspapers and/or read
a scientific journal e.g. Scientific American or New scientist.
2. Choose a story(ies) which interests you and has a scientific background.
3. Find out more about the story by looking at more newspapers,
magazines or researching on the internet.
4. Use science textbooks, the library or the internet to find out more
about the science behind the story.
You must present what you have found out.
You must describe the story and explain the relevant science.
You could choose pathway 1, 2, or 3.
 Pathway 1- write an article for a children’s magazine.
 Pathway 2- write a script for an item on Newsround.
 Pathway 3 - if you have access to a video camera/mobile phone you could make
a film for Newsround.
If you decide to do the pathway 3 you can work in a small group.
For example, one person could be the journalist; one could be a member of the public affected
by the story and one could be a scientist.
If you cannot find a news story why not choose the Nepal Earthquake.
