Dual Credit/Dual Enrollment (37-15-38) Mississippi Community/Junior Colleges and Public Universities A Dual Enrolled Student is a student who is enrolled in a community/junior college or state institution of higher learning while enrolled in high school. By statute, eligible students can take a semester’s worth (12 semester credit hours at public universities and must earn a “B” or higher on the first 6 hours / 15 semester credit hours at community/junior colleges) of dual enrollment classes. A Dual Credit Student is a student who is enrolled in a community/junior college or state institution of higher learning while enrolled in high school and who is receiving high school and college credit for postsecondary coursework. By statute, eligible students can take an unlimited number of credit hours as a dual enrolled student. The local school district determines the secondary dual credit award. Developmental education courses cannot be used as dual credit. Eligibility Criteria Recommendation (community/junior colleges and public universities): Students may be admitted to this dual enrollment/dual credit program with a minimum overall 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale on all high school courses and with successful completion of 14 core high school units and/or high school junior status. (The 14 core high school units are listed and defined in Appendix B of the Mississippi Public School Accountability Standards.) Students may also be admitted to the dual enrollment/dual credit program with a minimum of an overall 3.0 GPA on all high school courses and a minimum composite ACT score of 30 or the equivalent SAT score. Each student seeking admission to this program must submit an unconditional written recommendation from his/her high school principal or guidance counselor. 1 Placement: Students participating in this program must meet prerequisites for college courses. Additionally, students are required to demonstrate that they are enrolling in courses at the appropriate instructional level. Most commonly at community/junior colleges, course placement is accomplished through a review of ACT scores, high school transcripts, and completion of placement tests (COMPASS or Accuplacer). Public universities utilize ACT subtest scores and Accuplacer. Agreements: All agreements for dual credit/dual enrollment are made at the local level between the individual community/junior college and local school district. Local agreements will include specifics about class locations, cost, transportation, eligible instructors, etc. The statewide list of community/junior college and public university dual credit courses and individual college points of contact can be found at http://www.mississippi.edu/oasa/dual_enrollment.asp and http://www.mccb.edu/program/aaDefault.aspx.
