DUAL ENROLLMENT/DUAL CREDIT
§ 37-15-38 A local school board, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning
and the State Board for Community Colleges shall establish a dual enrollment system under
which students in the school district who meet the prescribed criteria of this section may be
enrolled in a postsecondary institution in Mississippi while they are still in school.
DEFINITION
A Dual Enrolled Student is a student who is enrolled in a community/junior college or state institution of
higher learning while enrolled in high school.
A Dual Credit Student is a student who is enrolled in a community/junior college or state institution of higher
learning while enrolled in high school and who is receiving high school and college credit for postsecondary
coursework.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA RECOMMENDATION
Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all high school courses and successful completion of 14 core
high school units and/or junior status and written recommendation from school principal or guidance
counselor
OR
Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all high school courses and a minimum composite ACT score of
30 or the equivalent SAT score and written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor
Dual Enrollment – students can earn up to a semester's worth of college credit in high school (semester’s
worth = MCJCs college credit hours 15; MS public universities credit hours 12)
Dual Credit – unlimited number of college credits
High School Carnegie Unit Equivalency - One (1) three-hour university or community/junior college course is
equal to one (1) high school Carnegie unit.
Memorandums of Agreement must be signed with local school districts
Must meet the same admission criteria as traditional students
62 courses approved by all 15 community colleges
Courses within the IHL academic general education core
Written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor

COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY DECIDES:

Placement (for college-readiness)
Instructor
Teaching site
Teaching schedule
Tuition & fees (sometimes negotiable)
INELIGIBLE ACADEMIC DUAL CREDIT OFFERINGS
No developmental education courses
(March 2014) Students may receive dual credit for taking Biology I, Algebra I, English II, and U.S. History;
however, they are still required to pass each required subject area test.
APPLICATION OF COURSES
LEA’s shall determine how to apply Carnegie Units earned through dual credit courses towards high school
graduation requirements based on the content area of the postsecondary course
