Goodbye to the Smiths It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Jesse and Nina Smith. Jesse is being deployed to Lakeland, FL where he will serve in the recruitment office there. They have been in Florida this past week looking for a house. They will be missed---for their faithfulness to the church and their friendship to this congregation. It may be that they will not make it back for one more service with us but the bulletin will post their address as soon as possible. May the coming year bring good health and happiness to all those we love. What Make’s Marriage Successful? More than likely most people will enter into marriage without serious thought. They certainly may not think about how important it is to take time and thought about making a marriage successful. The continuing high divorce rate and many now, simply living together suggests lack of this serious thought. God is the creator of man and woman (Genesis 2) and describes to each and everyone of us that His authority is above all others. When we read the scriptures we read of God being the author of marriage (Genesis 2 and 3). Since God knows man and woman and is the author of marriage, He certainly has the right to tell us how to have a successful marriage. From the Genesis account we learn that Eve was to be a help meet, and Adam was to leave his mother and father and "cleave to his wife," Adam was also to provide for his family, and Eve was to be subjection to Adam (Genesis 2:18, 24, 3:17-19, 16). In the New Testament we are given more scriptures telling us about marriage (Ephesians 5: 22-6:4). Marriage, as ordained by God, is supposed to be monogamous and permanent. (Matthew 19:4-10). So what would be a very important thing to understand to make marriage work? There must be a denial of selfishness. The "love" of Ephesians 5:25, 28, 33 is an unselfish love. This love actually has as its action in the seeking of what is best for another. 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 contains teaching which is illustrative of selfishness in the marriage relationship. Brethren, the ideal marriage is a marriage which is based on strong spiritual conviction and a spiritual foundation (1 Peter 3:7; Matthew 7: 24-28). Marriage is so much easier and enjoyable when both have the same spiritual beliefs, goals, and values. Marriage is a beautiful way of life inspired by God. It is in this union that man and woman find their ultimate social, emotional, and biological fulfillment. Marriage, as established and ordained by God, is desirable and successful.
