An organization based in Alabama, was behind the commercial. The 30-second biblical spot popped up much to the surprise of football fans in the Washington, D.C. area. It also aired in Birmingham, Alabama. Only a few days ago, the commercial was rejected by Fox Sports for being too religious and offensive. In the television ad, a group of friends are watching a football game in a living room. They cheer when one of the players on defense tackles his opponent. A close-up shot shows the defensive player’s perspiring face where he has painted “John 3:16.” One of the viewers asks his neighbor what that means. After the neighbor shrugs, the viewer offers to look it up for them on his cell phone. The commercial concludes with “LookUp316.com: A Message of Hope.” Within hours of the airing of the commercial, the lookUp316 website attracted so much traffic that it was difficult to load the web page. Brethren, so many people looked up this verse wanting to see what it said. It is a good thing to hear of people reading God’s word but I wonder how many truly understood what they read. Most religions including this website explain that this verse teaches only in a belief system, that is a heart-felt faith and you will be saved. The question we must ask, is that what this verse says? “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). What do we come away with when we read this verse? If we read it in its context we come away from this verse understanding that John 3:16 is wonderful because of the negative purpose of the expression, the positive purpose, and the condition upon which man can enjoy the benefits of God's love. The negative element is, "should not perish." The positive is. "but have everlasting life". Now, notice the condition, "whoever believes in him." What we need to understand is that a Saving belief is always active and obedient (James 2:24, Hebrews 5:8,9). The "believe" mentioned is present tense. Which means the belief continues. This believing, obedient person "should not perish. If one ceases to believe (that is an obedient faith), he or she shall perish (Heb. 3:12-15). The Bible is very clear what it takes to be saved through Jesus verse 17. We must Believe, Repent of our sins, confess His name before others, and be Baptized for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38). Then we are to remain faithful to the end. This is God’s message that was sent through His Son. Follow it, obey it, live it and we will find ourselves with Christ in the end.
