It would be nice to have at least one recipe from every family. (We have many recipes from past members.) TO BE OR NOT TO BE IMMERSED Last week we looked at the word Baptism and that if one wants to be saved they have to be baptized without question. However a question asked by many. Are we to be immersed in water or is sprinkling or pouring enough as many religions practice? Well let’s look to the scriptures and see what we read. Once again there is no question when one looks to the Word of God; NewTestament baptism was always an immersion in water. The Greek word for “baptism” (batisma) clearly means to immerse or to plunge. There is no other meaning to be found anywhere in the Greek. It consists of the process “of immersion, submersion, and emergence” (Vines Complete Expository Dictionary, pg. 50). All reputable sources, without exception, give immersion as the common and primary sense of the word. There is no indication whatsoever that sprinkling or pouring was practiced in the early church. Baptism was always a burial. Notice the words of Paul “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4) and “buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead” (Colossians 2:12). Now think about this, just as a dead body is completely buried in dirt, the person that is to be baptized is also to be completely buried in water. Think about John. He baptized many people in Aenon. The bible is very clear why he chose this place. “Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there and they came and were baptized” (John 3:23). This verse confirms for all that baptism was an immersion in water. Sprinkling and pouring for baptism could have been done anywhere whether there was much water or not. So one may ask where did sprinkling and pouring come from if it is not found in the bible. The answer is very simple from men after the completion of the New Testament, Men decided on their own that sprinkling and pouring was sufficient even though Christ never authorized it. Brethren, I am sure that everyone would agree that the dead are buried, not the living. However many denominational churches erroneously teach that those being baptized are already alive spiritually (i.e., saved). Therefore they bury living people! The truth is, however, we are buried in the watery grave of baptism dead in sin and rise up and made alive (Colossians 2:13). Are you saved in the way Jesus prescribed? That is the one and only way, immersed in water washing away your sins. Ernie For our Prayers-Aug.14 2011 Update: Ernie’s grandmother has been moved from rehab to a nursing facility.
