English 12 & English 12Honors Syllabus The British Literary Tradition and Social Issues through the Eras of History Mrs. Kem Kidwell; Rm. 208; 2013-2014; Per. 1 It is my privilege to welcome you to English 8! I love the subject and assure you that even if you do not share this love for literature, you will develop an understanding of literature that we study. You will find success in English, this year. Mrs. Kidwell Overview: English 8 is a course designed to allow students the opportunity to read, interpret, and analyze various works. In this course, the students will develop skills in reading, writing, speaking, vocabulary, and literary analysis. English 8 will be geared toward preparing students for the demands of high school.. Students will be studying grammar, sp4ell/vocabulary, and literature. Students will be required to complete a research project. I will guide you through each step. Throughout the year, students will complete writing projects on a variety of subjects, including the research project.. All activities and course work were chosen in order to prepare students high school success. Grading 90% - 100% A 80% - 89% B 70% - 79% C 60% - 69% D Expectations Students will be on time and prepared for class everyday (notebooks, textbooks/novels, and pen/pencil. Students are expected to participate in class every day and to do assigned reading. Work missed from absences should be made up according to the deadlines established in the TCS Handbook, and if students know they are going to be absent they should check on RENWEB for class work. Assignments Read, discuss, and write about literature. Daily vocabulary words. Weekly responses based on literary quotes Some daily homework assignments based on reading. Oral studies (speeches/debate). In-class work Grammar assignments Class materials needed: 3 ring binder or folder with brads and pockets to be used for English only A yellow highlighter Loose-leaf college-lined paper Pens (blue or black and red)/pencils 1 Flash drive (to submit research paper) 100 3 x5 index cards (for research) You are welcome to bring computers to class, if you wish. Phones may never be used without specific permission from the teacher to use one for class purpose. (TCS policy on phone usage is stated in the TCS handbook which is online.) Class Activities: Writing: Students will build their critical thinking and writing skills through writing assignment, and a research project. Students will also be expected to explain personal responses to literary works.. Speaking/Listening: Students will be expected to participate in class discussions and present information, both individually and in groups. Grammar: Grammar and sentence diagramming will be reviewed and sentences analyzed in order to help students refine their writing skills. Vocabulary: Students in the English program will develop vocabulary through the use of the Spelling and vocabulary words and the study of literature.
