English I Syllabus Course Description English I is a language arts course for high school freshman designed to prepare students for the demands of two or four-year college degree programs and/or for the workplace. Selections from American literature are organized around universal literary themes and are explored in depth. Elements of grammar including: identification and function of the parts of speech, identification of the components of a sentence, identification of the components of a paragraph, and the correct usage of the English language, will be studied throughout the academic year The writing and thinking process is study through several forms of writing sentences, paragraphs and compositions. Strengthening of student vocabulary through the study of Greek/Latin roots Course Content Standards/Objectives 1. Students will analyze and correct grammar through classroom participation and homework assignments as well as through writing. 2. Students will read, practice, write, and analyze literary concepts. 3. Students will examine and apply vocabulary to their writing and reading 4. Students will identify and evaluate literary terms as they apply to all forms of literature. 5. Students will recognize and examine types and characteristics of literary genres, including poetry, short stories, plays, and novels.
