As one of a team of First Nations Relations staff in Smithers, the Senior Advisor, First Nations Relations examines controversial issues and proposals which have high economic value, high risk for legal challenges, or high political impacts. Issues and proposals are with regard to the use of natural resources on Crown Land and require a determination of Strength of Claim and the impact on First Nations’ aboriginal interests or treaty rights. This position carries out complex consultations and negotiations to address First Nations’ concerns while minimizing any negative impacts on provincial revenues and objectives. The Senior First Nations Advisor manages a small team of District Advisors and also provides leadership to ensure the District as a whole carries out meaningful consultation in line with current case law and updated procedures. Additionally, the Senior Advisor actively participates in the District Leadership Team to help set the direction and strategy for District operations and the Skeena Region as a whole. For applicants to be considered for this position, their application must clearly demonstrate they have the following education and experience: Master’s Degree in the natural resource sector (e.g., forestry, resource management, agrology, environmental science) or a related field or advanced studies in a field related to BC First Nations (such as anthropology, archaeology, etc) and two (2) years of related experience; OR, Bachelor’s Degree in the natural resource sector (e.g., forestry, resource management, agrology, environmental science) or a related field and four (4) years of related experience; OR, Diploma in the natural resource sector (e.g., forestry, resource management, agrology, environmental science) or a related field and six (6) years of related experience; OR, An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered. Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence. Must be registered or immediately eligible for registration, as a professional, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (i.e. Registered Professional Forester with the Association of Forest Professionals, Professional Agrologist with Institute of Agrologists, Registered Professional Engineer or Geoscientist with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists).
