Safeguarding and Welfare Requirement: Safety and Suitability of Premises, Environment and Equipment. Providers must keep premises and equipment clean. Article 24 Children have the right to a clean environment. 5.6 Litter Policy statement In our Pre-school, we aim to ensure that attitudes, good examples in practice and role models are encouraged so that this will stay with the children into adulthood. Rights The children of our Pre-school have the right to play and learn in a clean and healthy environment. It is our goal to create a litter free environment for our staff and children. We recycle waste wherever possible. We see these aims as applying beyond the school gate, to the car park and area around the Pre-school. All members of the Pre-school have the right to suggest ways to improve the Pre-school environment. Respect All members of the Pre-school community develop an understanding of how to respect the premises by: Not dropping litter. Picking up litter that is lying around. Using recycling bins whenever possible. Assisting in maintaining a clean site. The staff develop an understanding of how to respect the premises by: Supporting children in developing an awareness of looking after the environment. Using the recycling bins for all paper and recycle other waste materials as appropriate. Educating the children on the consequences of dropping litter. Page 1 of 2 Lytchett Matravers Pre-school Reviewed September 2014 The Eco schools coordinator develops an understanding of how to respect the premises by: Ensuring there are an adequate number of waste bins. Listening and responding to questions and comments from members of the Pre-school community. Highlighting issues at Senior Practitioner and staff meetings. Procedures Adequate bins are placed in a prominent place in all rooms and toilets and are emptied daily. Dropping of litter is greatly discouraged and explanations are given to the children of why litter should not be dropped. e.g. o It is unsightly o It is unsafe and dangerous to plants, other children and animals. o Dropping food can attract rats and flies. Positive praise is encouraged when children dispose of their litter carefully. Litter picking is seen as a positive environmental action which encourages co-operation with others and a sense of pride of ownership of the Pre-school premises. Staff regularly monitor the Pre-school grounds when the garden is in use. Staff check the grounds on a daily basis for broken glass, animal fouling and any other hazardous items.
