European Economic and Social Committee AMENDMENT 3 DOSSIER: CCMI/138 Coal and Lignite 514th PLENARY SESSION 17-18 February 2016 RAPPORTEUR: CO-RAPPORTEUR: Dumitru Fornea Renata Eisenvortová Michel Dubromel Point 1.4 Amend as follows: The use of indigenous hard coal and lignite, which account for 88% of EU conventional energy reserves, reduces – solely in respect of stored energy reserves – energy import dependence on energy imports and energy costs. Aside from renewable energies, coal moderates energy prices: the availability of imported coal ensures strong competition such that coal prices reflect a truly global market. Coal mining provides skilled jobs, helps the development of mining regions and sits at the start of many value chains. Reason The paragraph refers only to finite energy resources for which dependence is indicated by the quantity of reserves available. In order to fulfil the independence criterion, it is also necessary to take into account renewable, infinite energies, which by their very definition offer independence compared to stocks. _____________ CCMI/138 – EESC-2015-01360-03-01-AMP-TRA EN
