European Economic and Social Committee AMENDMENT 10 DOSSIER: CCMI/138 Coal and Lignite 514th PLENARY SESSION 17-18 February 2016 RAPPORTEUR: CO-RAPPORTEUR: Dumitru Fornea Renata Eisenvortová Michel Dubromel Point 2.10 Amend as follows: "De-rating" means adjusting capacity data to reflect the availability of particular types of power plants. Thus, it gives an indication of the output from a particular source that is likely to be technically available at times of peak demand. Equipment that generates electricity from conventional sources has a better availability factor than equipment that relies on renewable sources. For example, a coal-fired power plant might be available for 85% of the time, whereas a wind turbine might be available for 17-24% of the time, depending on its location. Reason This point addresses the issue of equipment availability. Whereas energy is distributed through a network, the point makes a direct comparison between two different types of energy production. The comparison can only work if it makes a distinction between all conventional and all renewable energy sources. The point ought to be amended to reflect this. ________________ CCMI/138 – EESC-2015-01360-10-01-AMP-TRA EN
