This three year rotation of texts takes us through the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. So much of the giving that we witness in life comes with the expectation of some sort of gratification in return, either in the form of thanks or recognition, that sometimes we lose sight of what true giving is meant to be. True giving, is giving without conditions or expectations attached. For example, if I plant a shade tree today that won’t mature for 40 or 50 years, I can almost guarantee I won’t be around when others are enjoying the shade it provides. Like that, there are many things I can give today for which I’ll never see any results, a compliment here, a bit of encouragement there, and I’ll be planting seeds of a positive nature. I won’t see these seeds grow into whole trees or even tiny flowers, but they most certainly add to the betterment of this world in which we live. I give to the work and ministry of Jesus Christ, because I imagine my giving unconditionally will result in planting seeds which will carry on the work of Jesus for years to come. True giving is important for our Spiritual lives and important to the life of the church. As we reflect on our giving to St. John’s, take some time to assess what it is you value. It’s been said that if you want to really know what a person values, look at their checkbook. Our expenditures show what we value. As you reflect on your gifts as a household, determine ways you can share your blessings to reflect your values. Making a faith promise to the church for the upcoming year is a physical lesson about God’s love. God never ceases to offer us life and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Making a commitment is a bold and simple way to respond to God’s love and action in our 5 lives. In addition, giving to God helps move the Kingdom forward. Committing to share your gifts means standing together with your Christian brothers and sisters in ministry and mission for a purpose beyond yourself. Whether you can share $1.00 or $1,000 per week, it matters and it makes a difference. Whatever you have to give is worthy of being shared. It means trusting that together, our gifts are abundantly more than enough to change the world. Giving is important for our Spiritual lives and important to the life of the church. May God open your heart this year as you prayerfully consider your giving to the ministry and mission of St. John’s UCC. Peace and Healing, Pastor Linda ST.
