Jodie Cocker OBJECTIVE Recent MSc Geological and Environmental Hazards graduate from the University of Portsmouth. Has a Geology degree with four years’ experience as an Exploration Geologist. Seeking geoscience opportunity which utilises the remote sensing, GIS and report writing skills that I have acquired, with potential for further development. PREVIOUS EDUCATION September 2013 – September 2014: The University of Portsmouth MSc Geological and Environmental Hazards: Distinction Thesis. Title: ‘Analysis of multibeam bathymetry data for the classification of seafloor geohazards and the associated slope behaviour implications for future infrastructure development: Mad Dog, Gulf of Mexico.’ This involved geomorphological mapping of bathymetry data provided by BP and a risk assessment. The data was viewed and manipulated using ArcGIS. Hazard Modelling and Risk Assessment. This module consisted of practical lessons in the computer laboratory and statistics classes relevant to the subject. Projects included: i) volcanic ash cloud simulation and hazard analysis using VBA for excel and ArcMap, ii) hurricane storm track modelling using ArcMap, iii) debris flow risk assessment using remote sensing in ArcMap and debris flow simulation in QGIS, iv) probabilistic modelling of natural hazards using Monte Carlo simulation; Geological and Environmental Hazards. Geomorphological mapping of the Cotswolds was carried out utilising 3D LiDAR data viewed in ILWIS. Following a three day expedition to the field to confirm ground instability occurrences, the safest route was planned for a gas pipeline installation across the Cotswold escarpment. Soil and Rock Mechanics. The geotechnical properties of soils and rocks were investigated to demonstrate their strengths and weaknesses. Findings were used in engineering equations and applied to investigate the causes of natural hazards; Volcanology and Seismology. The impacts of various volcanic and seismological scenarios were explored, as well as the importance of education and communication to the public. September 2004 – June 2007: The University of Brighton BSc (Hons) Geology: Second Class Honours (First Division). Subjects. Including: GIS, geohazards, interpreting geological maps, structural geology, oceanography, mathematical skills, sedimentology, Earth resources, exploration geology; Field work. This includes mapping the geology and structures in SE Spain, mapping the ophiolite complex in Cyprus, mapping metamorphic terrain in Cornwall, and observations of the geology in Pembrokeshire; Final year dissertation. Title: ‘The volcanic evolution of Landmannalaugar, Iceland; Igneous and geothermal processes.’ This involved geological mapping in Iceland, followed up with thin section and XRF analysis of samples to explore the origin of bimodal volcanism in Landmannalaugar. LANGUAGES French, Spanish – basic COMPUTER PROGRAM AND SOFTWARE EXPERIENCE Microsoft Word, MS Excel, ArcMap – Good Grapher, Corel Draw – proficient Excel’s VBA, @risk, ER Mapper, ILWIS, QGIS, Vulcan, Micromine – basic. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE March 2012 – May 2013: Exploration Geologist/Team Leader (Second in Charge) Barrick Gold, Lumwana, Zambia (Shear-hosted stratiform Cu-Co-U deposit) Supervised drill crews/inspected drill rigs with focus on safety, the environment and QAQC; Diamond drill core and reverse circulation (RC) chip logging; Geological section interpretation utilising geochemical assays and logging; Trained/mentored national core technicians and expatriate geologists; Promoted to team leader to lead sterilisation drill programmes during 2013; Monthly/weekly drilling progress report writing and end of programme technical report writing using MS Office and ArcMap; Field mapping. April 2008 – February 2011: Exploration Geoscientist /Acting Project Geologist BHP Billiton, Mining Area C, Western Australia (Iron ore deposit) Supervised RC and diamond drilling operations with focus on safety, the environment and QAQC; Diamond drill core and RC chip logging; Geological section interpretation using geochemical assays, down hole geophysical data and logging; Responsible for inducting and training new starters on the RC rig/diamond rig/BHP safety procedures; Field mapping with the use of a handheld Juno; Planned and wrote RC exploration and diamond geometallurgy drill proposals using airborne geophysics, previous drilling, satellite imagery viewed in ArcMap and geological models; Promoted to acting project geologist June 2010 – February 2011; Was a member of the PIPs (behavioural safety observations) steering committee for 6 months; Was a safety and health representative (October 2009 – February 2011); Became an Appointed Person in September 2010 (part of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994). August - October 2007: Student Geologist (Student Technical Experience Program – STEP) Anglo American, Perth, Western Australia (Greenfields exploration) Data acquisition; Field reconnaissance and mapping (Flinders Ranges, South Australia and The Lynd, Queensland); Soil sampling (The Lynd, Queensland); The compilation of rock samples into a report (The Lynd, Queensland). CREDENTIALS AND TRAINING • Completed a two year Executive Development Program with the Mt Eliza Business School in Melbourne, as part of the BHP Billiton graduate scheme. This focussed on understanding personality types, personal strengths and learning styles, negotiation skills, leadership skills and teamwork; • Awarded with Structural Geology for Exploration Targeting course by BHP Billiton (10 day University of Western Australia MSc degree module including five day practical in Kalgoorlie); Selected for the July 2014 Iceland expedition with ERASMUS exploring the interaction of transtensive faulting and rifting, the associated seismic hazards and communication of hazards to the community; B class UK driving license. LEISURE ACTIVITIES Successful 2014 season competing as a coxswain and rower for Ryde Rowing Club; Travelled February 2011 - March 2012, when I learned to dive with SSSI.
