Unit #3 - Recording Earth’s Geological History OVERALL EXPECATIONS: Analyse, with reference to geological records, the relationship between climate, geology and life on Earth, and evaluate contributions to our understanding of changes in Earth systems over geological time. To investigate geological evidence of major changes that have occurred during Earth’s history, and of the various processes that have contributed to these changes. To demonstrate an understanding of how changes to Earth’s surface have been recorded and preserved throughout geological time and how they contribute to our knowledge of Earth’s history. Learning Goals By the end of this lesson I should be able to... Subject 1. Introduction to Earth’s Geological History and Relative Dating Techniques 2. Absolute Dating Techniques 3. Fossils Describe the geologic time scale in terms of the different units of time. Describe how to use relative dating techniques to identify ages of rocks. Explain the several different methods used to determine absolute age Describe how objects are dated by the use of certain radioactive elements Explain several methods by which fossils can be preserved Discuss how fossils can be used to interpret Earth’s past physical and environmental history Terminology Section homework 21.1, 21.2 Pg. 556 # 1-5 Pg. 561 # 1-5 Self Assessment □ I can describe most or all of the key terms and explain the concepts related to the learning goals in my own words. □ I have a few questions about the material in this class. □ I had a hard time understanding what this class was about.
