CLASS TITLE: PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST I
ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)
This is geological work requiring licensure by the State Board of Professional Geologists. Duties include
technical geological investigations and preparation of geological reports, maps, and cross-sections
relating to mineral resources, including construction aggregates and soils, hydrogeology, near surface
geology, geologic hazards, engineering geology, and other geologic interpretations necessary for landuse planning, environmental regulation or other comprehensive studies; consulting with and giving
advice to governmental agencies and analyzing or evaluating geologic interpretations prepared by
other agencies or the private sector; or comparable field, office or laboratory work.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Performs studies in stratigraphy, sedimentology, paleontology, mineralogy, petrology,
geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology, geomorphology, economic, marine, engineering, and
environmental geology.
Analyzes land parcels to assist land management agencies regarding oil and gas development or
economic mineral potential.
Analyzes impact on aquifer, shoreline, wetlands, and other geological systems by human
activities.
Prepares reports and articles suitable for publication in professional journals.
Serves as principal investigator on research projects and contracts or grants.
Reviews lithologic, stratigraphic, hydrogeologic and environmental interpretations as submitted
by applicants in support of permit requests for mineral resource exploration, production and
reclamation, municipal water well field design, injection wells, waste disposal, dredge and fill,
land use plans, soil and groundwater monitoring and clean up, foundation design, construction
or aggregate material, and shoreline erosion improvements.
Signs off and seals permits, contracts, reports, and other documents which require a
Professional Geologist seal for public record.
Performs related work as required.

Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques of geological research, analysis or
testing.
Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis.
Knowledge of the methods of data collection.
Skill in the use of scientific and geological engineering laboratory and field equipment.
Ability to collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to the science of geology.
Ability to conduct geological studies or analyses using scientific methods and techniques.
Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of scientific data.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.
Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to the
science of geology.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Registration as a Professional Geologist in accordance with Florida Statute 492.
