Urban Ecological Diversity Protocol Population ecology and diversity analyses often incorporate richness of the number of species, evenness of populations therein, and frequently combine such datum to calculate total diversity. Given that the BioBlitz’ of 2013 and 2014 did not address population counts, in order to utilize these data, we will also leave out evenness within diversity analyses. And so time spent will simply be observing and taking note of the individual species of organisms you encounter along a geographical transect of Manhattan. Manhattan is 13.7 miles long and approximately 2 miles wide at 68th running west to east. Each student, independently, will be responsible for diversity counts along approximately 0.5 miles along either a N-S or E-W transect of the map on the following page. Considering the average NYC person can walk 3 – 3.5 mph…. we need you to slow it down so that you will actually take notice of the ‘critters’ you come across. If you are going N-S – a single mile is between 5-10 blocks depending on the length of the block (Midtown blocks are longer than downtown blocks), If you are walking E-W, one mile is approximately 4 blocks…. Do the math for your area and don’t skimp – this is only an hour of your life. You may learn and see something new and interesting along the way as well. This data collection walk should span one hour of your time. This time of collection, for obvious and not so obvious reasons, should occur during daylight hours. Look at the map on the following page – there is a very general break down of the neighborhoods and the distances needed to be covered therein. Pick a neighborhood and with the others working that general location – break up the distances you plan to cover between yourselves. You are responsible for the data collection and the upload of the data to the eportfolio by October 15th. S. D’Andrea Delesario ??????? ???????? P. Aranela R.
