Class D Termly News Autumn 2 If you have any questions about the information below please email me : jbleasdale@valence.kent.sch.uk Jo Bleasdale (Assistant Head Teacher, Lower School) English: Maths: Science: Class D will continue their Fresh Start reading and writing catch up programme this term. All of the students have learned new sounds in term 1 and will continue to learn new sounds, to blend them into words and to learn how to spell them. Students work 1:1 with a member of staff for 30 mins per day. After a wonderful first term in D we will be continuing to build on our fundamental knowledge. We will be using our everyday environment to explore doubling, halving and time. To support this learning we will be using time to help further our understanding of half and quarter. Class D are working on electricity. They will be given opportunities to compare different types of circuit, to measure current and voltage and to design and build a range of electrical devices. Computing: Class D are building on their ICT skills this term to produce different types of documents. This will involve using many programs such as the Microsoft suite, Comic Life, Read and Write Gold and the Textease Suite. Humanities: Art: The class will be doing a Textiles project which will include applique, weaving and felt making based on Circles by Kandinsky. Pupils will recap about colour theory as part of this project. Food Technology: Class D will be learning about using large equipment such as the oven and hob to prepare items of food and different cooking methods i.e. boiling, frying, baking, roasting. They are also learning about how to make food healthier. Music: Class D will be learning about woodwind instruments this term. They will learn to recognise the sounds of the flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoon. They will also use software to compose a piece of music incorporating woodwind sounds. Geography – The students are learning about tourism. Looking at when they were tourists, types of tourism and jobs in tourisms. History – The students will study the English civil war. This will involve lots of role play and learning about the soldiers and weapons of that time. R.E – For term 1 and 2 the students will be learning about the history and beliefs of Islam. PSHE and Citizenship: This term we are concentrating on our role as a citizen of the world by keeping up to date with world events through the BBC Newsround Website. Each week we read about and discuss various news stories. P.E./Swim: Students will undertake a unit of work that develops teamwork and competition through Boccia, New-Age Kurling and Handball. They will be encouraged to take part in competitive situations with a focus on how to use basic strategy to win games. Within the swimming pool, they will continue to develop stamina through aquatics.
