Exam format & Tips for Studying:
Make sure that you always read the directions!
When you write a short answer or long essay, make sure you actually answer the question and use the
right number of sentences.
Each of your exams will have vocabulary, multiple choice/fill in the blank, and writing sections.
You will need to put your answers on the answer sheet, so make sure you know which answer goes
where, and that you understand all of the questions!
WRITING: Visions Workbook, Unit 1, Chapters 1-5 [p 1-40]
 Parts of speech – verb, noun, proper noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb, suffix
 Tense agreement – write with the same tense in the whole essay or short answer
 Past tense verbs – regular and irregular
 Was(n’t) / did(n’t) / could(n’t) + present tense verb
 Contractions
 there / their / they’re / your / you’re
 Dialogue – punctuating and capitalizing
 Simile – using like or as to compare
 Personification – describing something that isn’t human as if it is a person
 Rhyme
 Characterization – direct / indirect
tells/shows how a character thinks or feels
LITERATURE: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Chapters 1-4 [p 4-25]
 Vocabulary
 Plot – what happens
 Characters
 Character motivation – why a character does, says, or thinks something
 Summary – the main ideas and important parts of the story, written in fewer words
 Genres – horror, mystery, comedy (there are many more!)

 Festivals, traditions, and culture – what do you know about festivals in general?
 Korean Lantern Festival

 Moral (of a story)
