Crust Earth’s solid, rocky, outer layer It’s divided into two parts: Oceanic Crust Average thickness: 5 – 10 km. Dense rocks Basalt – mostly Lava rocks Continental Crust 40 – 50 km. Less dense rocks Sandstone – mixture of other rocks Layer that we live one temperature: varies – most extreme 50o C = 100o F. -45o C = - 80o F Thinnest of the 4 layers. Fo = 9/5 (Co) + 32 Mantle Asthenosphere is just under the crust and it’s both like a liquid and a solid (can flow). Just like the Oobleck. Thickness – 2900 km (thickest layer). Composition – mostly iron, magnesium, and silicon. Temperature – 870o C = 1500o F Convection currents occur in this layer. Outer Core Thickness – 2200 km. Composition – iron, nickel (liquid) Temperature = 2200o C Inner Core Thickness – 1300 km. Composition – iron, nickel (solid) Temperature = 5000o C
