Guidelines for Lenten Devotions 2014
This year's key passage is from Hebrews Chapter 4: "15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
16
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to
help in time of need." (ESV)
Below are some other verses that relate and may be helpful. Other verses that have a meaning in your life
are also welcome, of course.
Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according
to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all
generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Numbers 11:14 I am not able to carry all this people alone; the burden is too heavy for me.
Acts 9:1 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went ot the high
priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the
Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
Psalm 119:27 Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous
works.
Luke 17:1 And he said to his disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through
whom they come!"
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should
not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in
order that the world might be saved through him.
I Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
II Cor. 5:18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the
ministry of reconciliation
I John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins,
we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
Job 16:19 Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And my advocate is on high.
Luke 15:27-28 And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf
because he has received him back safe and sound. But he became angry and was not willing to go in; and
his father came out and began pleading with him.
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the
gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Hebrews 2:18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being
tempted.
1 Thessalonians 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the
weak, be patient with them.
Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring
us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.
Luke 6:36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
1 Peter 2: 22-24 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did
not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who
judges justly. He bore our sins in his body on the tree that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
We would like each devotion to contain the following:
1. A title
2. A selected verse for the devotion.
3. The devotion itself. Approximately 200-500 words. A personal story, if possible,
with an application to life.
4. A brief closing prayer.
5. Your name. (If you want it to be anonymous, that's ok.)
Other reminders: The devotion booklet should help us all grow in the faith.
Forty devotions are needed.
Perhaps we could write about....dealing with a weakness, working through a temptation,
needing forgiveness, trying to help, feeling unworthy, approaching the Lord, sharing
grace, receiving grace, appreciating Christ's sacrifice, responding to Him....
Devotions are due Sunday, February 16; the booklet will be ready by Ash Wednesday,
March 5.
Everyone is invited to write - no age or experience or membership requirements
whatsoever!
Thanks in advance for helping with this project! If you have questions or comments,
please contact Pastor Foote, Nancy Gifft, or Pat Hollingsworth.
