CHRIST’S
BLOOD
4/26/15
“Power in the Blood”
Hebrews 10:8-25
I. Jesus’ shed blood deals with our sin PROBLEM (Hebrews 10:9)
“…then He said, “BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL.” He
takes away the first in order to establish the second.”
A. The old sacrificial system was replaced by Jesus’, once and for
all, sacrifice on the cross. (Hebrews 10:12)
II. Many of us need to change our PERCEPTION (Lev.17:11)
“For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you
on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by
reason of the life that makes atonement.”
A. From Genesis 3:21 to Revelation 12:11 blood is applied for the
benefit of God’s people. “And according to the Law, one may
almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without
shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22)
B. God’s word teaches us that blood is LIFE and it is sin that is
DEATH. (Romans 6:23) Blood is essential to life, we cannot live
without it; it is therefore symbolic of life.
Read I Corinthians 11:23-29. What does verse 29 mean?
III. Christ’s blood cleanses us from sin’s PENALTY (Romans 5:9)
“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall
be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”
In taking the Lord’s Supper how do we proclaim the Lord’s death to
the world until He comes?
A. We are all sinners and sin has a death penalty. “For the wages
of sin is death…” Romans 3:23 (Hebrews 10:1-4)
Saturday
How should you respond to Christ’s life giving blood?
IV. Christ’s blood cleanses us from all POSSIBLE sins (1 John 1:7)
Is it important to know why they observe the Lord's Supper? Why?
Prayers: Stacy Flores’ father, healing and recovery from surgery
“but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us
from all sin.”
A. This is in the present tense, it goes on continually. “All sin” here
means sin in all its various forms, functions and activities.
B. Our past sins. “In Him we have redemption through His blood,
the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.”
(Ephesians 1:7)
C. Our present sins. “For this is my blood of the covenant, which is
poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matt. 16:28)
Daily Meditations
Use this as an opportunity to spend some time meditating on
today’s message.
Monday
Do you see blood as gory and death or do you see blood as life?
Why does blood have to be shed for forgiveness to take place?
What does the blood of Jesus Christ mean to you?
D. Our future sins. “Jesus also suffered … in order to sanctify the
people through his own blood” (Hebrews 13:12)
Read 1 Peter 1:2. How is this blood sprinkled on us?
V. Christ’s blood cleanses us from sin’s POWER (Romans 6:14)
Name three ways you can know the blood has been applied to your
heart.
“For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under
grace.”
A. Sin is such a powerful influence in our lives that we must be set
free by God’s power, not by our willpower. Christ’s blood does not
reform us, it transforms us.
VI. What is the Lord’s Supper’s PURPOSE? (I Co. 11:24-26)
“…on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given
thanks, broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in
remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying,
“This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink
it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink
the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes.
A. The Lord’s Supper, communion, is a memorial that proclaims
Christ’s accomplished work on the cross. We remember Jesus,
His words and His “once and for all” sacrifice. This is what Paul is
teaching in these verses in I Corinthians chapter 11. First, we
remember Him; we remember His suffering, His sacrifice, His
humiliation and His exaltation.
