History. The student understands the similarities and differences of NativeAmerican groups in Texas…
The student is expected to:
(A) identify Native-American groups in Texas… and describe the regions in
which they lived…
(B) compare the ways of life of Native-American groups in Texas…
Introduction to Strategy:

“Hello, I am Miss Crow and I am going to be talking about the Wichita and Kiowa
tribes today. We are going to put this information on a chart called an acrostic.
Have you all ever used an acrostic before to organize your information?”(If they
have, great we will move on, if not then I will go into further explanation of what it
is and why we use it.) As we fill in our large acrostic, we would like you all to fill in
a chart of your own in your books.”
Step 1 - Modeling:

Introduce the acrostic and how it is used to organize and remember information
on a category or subject.

We will start off with an example of an acrostic. I will talk about the Kiowa and fill
in my acrostic using the letters K, I, O, W, and A. Students will be able to write
down information on the tribes in their books under the given tribe so they can
remember information on the Kiowa.
Step 2 - Guided Practice:

I will talk about the Wichita tribe and different facts about them.

I will ask students to help me form an acrostic for the Wichita tribe.

If students cannot come up with a phrase for a certain letter I will ask them
questions to help their thinking process.

Once finished we will read our acrostic together as a class.
Step 3 - Application of Strategy:

I will instruct the students to divide into 3 groups.

The teachers are going to supervise the work that the students do.

Once in groups I will give the students a poster board to share in the group and
have them come up with ideas they can use on the provided poster boards. One
board will have Texas on it, another will have Native, and the last will have
Americans on it.

Each group will talk about different phrases they can use for their acrostic.

Once we have talked about categories we can use on our acrostic, we will tell the
students that they are going to create their own acrostics in their groups.

Students will come up for a different phrase about any tribe we have learned
about using the letters in their given word (Texas, Native, or Americans).

Each teacher will have examples of phrases to use in case their group cannot
come up with any phrases. The teacher can ask the students questions to help
them come up with phrases.
Step 4-Closure:

We will come back together as a class.

Each group will come up to the front and present their poster to the class using
their acrostic.

After each group has gone we will talk about what we will be presenting to the 4th
grade next Monday.

We will tell the students they will be reading their acrostics while wearing their
masks (Lesson 4) and holding their drums (Lesson 2).

We will practice the presentation. We will go over it a second time if necessary.

We will thank the students for their participation, have a good Thanksgiving, and
tell them we look forward to our presentation next Monday.
