Poetry: New Vocabulary Words and Acrostic Poems

Curriculum Strand: (Grades 2, 3 and 4)
Writing: 1. Generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended
purpose and audience;
2. Draft and revise their writing, using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms
and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience;
3. Use editing, proof reading, and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of
language conventions, to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work
effectively;
4. Reflect on and identify their strengths as writers, areas for improvement, and the
strategies they found most helpful at different stages in the writing process.
Media Literacy: create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences, using
appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques;

Questions: After watching the video do you know what the words mean? What are Lady
Vocab and Professor P doing to make learning new vocabulary fun?
Model task:
(Slide 4) Randomly select a word from the dictionary or link the words to another unit of
study. Be sure to read and understand the definition so the word can be used in a sentence.
(Challenge your higher-level students to pick words they do not know already.) Each
student creates an acrostic poem with his or her word.
(Slide 5) Show examples of Acrostic poem.
Student Task/Game:
(Slide 6) Allow students time to pick a word, write an acrostic poem and edit. Students can
choose how they wish to present their poem.
(Slide 7) This presentation slide gives you a music file for the students who wish to sing their
acrostic poem like Lady Vocab.
Extensions:
Create other forms of poetry by using the same type of interactive whiteboard lesson.

Acrostic Poems
An Acrostic Poem, also known as a "name poem", tells about the word. It uses the
letters of the word for the first letter of each line. An acrostic poem is very easy to
write. It can be about any subject.

Task
1. Randomly select a word from the dictionary.
2. Be sure to read and understand the meaning of your new word. Can you use the
word in a sentence?
3. Draft an acrostic poem.
4. Share your poem with a classmate before you bring it to the teacher for final
proofing.
5. Print or type your good copy. Be sure to add pictures or artwork.
6. Practice reading or singing your poem for the final presentation.
