1. What is the Middle Ages also known as? What were some things that characterized the Middle Ages?
The Middle Ages are also known as the Dark Ages. Some things that characterized this time in
history is feudalism, disease, growth of the uneducated, and the church.
2. What is Feudalism? How did a person gain their rank?
Feudalism is the economic and political system that developed in Europe during the Middle
Ages. Each person gained their rank by birth.
3. List the order of power during Feudalism; list from the most power to the least. What is their role in
Feudalism?
Monarch, Lord, Knights, and Serfs/Peasants. Monarchs owned the land, Lords provided the king
with protection with knights and soldiers, knights were to protect the manors, and
serfs/peasants worked the land.
4. What did the people of the Middle Ages need protection from?
Conquest by Barbarians
5. Describe what was included on a manor?
Manor House, Mill, Smiths, gardens, livestock, peasant housing, etc.
6. Who did the Monarchs think gave them the right to rule?
Divine Rights of the King from God
7. What is a noble, and what did the nobles provide to the monarchs?
A person of high rank by birth or title; the provided them with knights and soilders.

They were to raise and train their children and some children of other noble families and
oversee household. They could not own land.

At age 7 become a page, 7 years later become a squire, at age 20, if worthy, become a knight

Working the land.

Vegetables, meat such as pork, and dark, course bread.

The body of people, such as priest, who perform sacred functions of a church. The pope,
cardinals, archbishops, bishops, and priests.

16. What is a pilgrimage? What is a crusade, what is another name for a crusade?
Pilgrimage- a journey to a holy site; Crusade- military expeditions to a holy site. Crusades are
also known as the Holy Wars. **Keep Pilgrimages and Crusades straight**

For religious purposes. Most told some type of story because most could not read and write.

the people.
Took place in churchs, wanted them to learn to read and write.
19. What where the two great Medieval Holidays? How were Holidays celebrated?
Christmas and Easter. Celebrated with church services, feast, and games.
20. How did monks spend their lives? What did they create that we still use today in the classroom?
In prayer and work. They created history books.
