MINOR REQUIREMENTS (33 CREDIT HOURS):
Students must complete 9 credits of EDU courses from UMPI prior to EDU 495.
 EDU 250 Foundations of Education (3)
 EDU 387 Teaching the Exceptional Child in the Regular Classroom (3)
 EDU/ENG 366 Children’s and Young Adult Literature (3)
 Successful completion of the Core Academic Skills for Educators or PRAXIS 1

Core Academic Skills for Educators:
 Reading: test code: 5712, score requirement: 156
 Writing: test code: 5722, score requirement: 162
 Mathematics: test code: 5732, score requirements: 150
 (Note: If you want to take all three together, register for the Combined Test: test code:
5751 and scores will be reported individually. Applicants for initial teacher certification
much achieve a composite score of 468 in the three sections with no single score being
lower than three points lower than the required scores.)
PRAXIS I (Note: PRAXIS I scores will be accepted until 8/31/18.)
 Reading: test code: 5710; score requirement: 176
 Writing: test code: 5720; score requirement: 175
 Mathematics: test code: 5730; score requirement: 175
 (Note: Applicants for initial teacher certification must achieve a PRAXIS I composite
score 526 in the three sections with no single score being more than three points lower
than the required scores.)
EDU 351 Teaching Reading in the Elementary School (3)
EDU 361 Teaching Science in Elementary School (3)
EDU 371 Teaching Social Studies in Elementary School (3)
EDU 381 Teaching Mathematics in Elementary School (3) or EDU 366 Teaching Mathematics
in Elementary School (VIA UMPI)
 PRAXIS II (test cored: 5001; Reading & Language Arts score requirement: 157; Science score
requirement: 159; Mathematics score requirement: 157; Social Studies score requirement: 155)
 Complete 9 credits of UMPI EDU courses prior to taking EDU 495
 EDU 495 Student Teaching (via UMPI) (12)
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
For full Maine state certification, students must also complete the following:
 Complete any two English courses (6)
 Complete any two Mathematics courses (6) MAT 130 & 131 recommended
 Complete any two Science courses (6)
 Complete any two Social Studies courses (anthropology, geography, history or political
science) (6)
 Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) – (test code: 5622; score required: 160) –
must be passed for certification
ADVISING NOTES:
 Core Academic Skills for Educators or PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II must be passed before
applying to student teach.
 Applications for student teaching must be submitted the semester before student teaching
(October 1st or March 1st).
 A minimum of 25% of the credits required for a minor needs to be earned at UMA for it
to be awarded.
 A student may be awarded any minor as long as no more than six credits of the minor can
be used to fulfill the requirements of the student’s major or concentration.
