PHS STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACTIVITIES Name of Group: Anti-Bully Student Support (ABSS) Eligibility Requirements: Open to all students who choose to stand up to bullying and take action to reduce bullying at Preble High School. Description: The goal of the ABSS group is to encourage our students to be “upstanders” as opposed to “bystanders”. We believe that when it comes to bullying there is no such thing as an “innocent bystander”. If you are not part of the solution you are a part of the problem. Time Commitment: We meet the second Monday of the month from 3:00 pm to 3:45 pm. Location: LMC/Fiction Area Activity Time Period: September to May Membership Limit: None Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Kelly Rowe --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name of Group: Diversity Circles Eligibility Requirement: Must be a junior or senior in good academic standing. Have good attendance and no behavioral issues. Description: A group process, which looks at the viewpoints and perspectives on race related matters. Students are engaged in exercises and activities that provide opportunities for in-depth conversation on this topic. Students will research and assess data relative to the achievement gap and in return develop action plans and strategies, which will help benefit all students academically. Students must be open to honest conversation and acceptance of different viewpoints. Time Commitment: A total of 8 periods, two periods at a time for four days. Activity Time Period: October through April Membership Limit: 12 Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Olson-Guillen Name of Group: Diversity Leadership Group Eligibility Requirements: Must have good attendance, no behavioral concerns and maintain good academic standing in all of their classes. Description: The goal of the Diversity Leadership Group is to create tolerance, acceptance, and unity in both the Preble and Green Bay communities. Diversity leaders come from a wide range of backgrounds, but have many things in common such as integrity, a strong work ethic, as well as motivation and passion. Volunteer work serves as a medium through which Diversity Leaders attempt to close the achievement gap between white and minority students. Collaborative brainstorming with students of other schools, as well as with professionals at conference workshops allow for diversity leaders to bring fresh, positive ideas to Preble. Student Diversity Leadership will strive for years to come to make Preble all it can be. Time Commitment: Meets once a month after school and sometimes during 6th hour. Procedures for Joining: Members are selected by the advisors. Those students selected will be invited to an end of the year meeting to discuss plans for the following school year or email aeolsonguillen@gbaps.org. Activity Time Period: September to May Membership Limit: 21 Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Amy Olson-Guillen --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name of Group: Minority Achievement Committee (MAC) Scholars Eligibility Requirements: Open to all students who are planning to attend an institution of higher learning after graduating from Preble. It is preferred that these students have, or are working towards, a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. Description: MAC Scholars is a program to bring people together, stretch out of our comfort zones, work with others, and encourage each other to do well in school. We hope to motivate and support students of color already in Advanced Placement (AP) and college prep classes, and to increase the number of students of color in these classes and continuing on to college, with the ultimate goal of closing the achievement gap. Another goal is to initiate conversations about race and diversity. MAC Scholars seeks to promote diversity through community and school events. We volunteer our time in The Hive and sponsor the Preble Talent Show. Time Commitment: We meet every Tuesday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Activity Time Period: September to May Membership Limit: 60 Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Amy Olson-Guillen --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name of Group: Peer Leaders Eligibility Requirements: Any student who is in good academic standing, is interested in enhancing leadership skills, possesses strong communication and presentation skills, and is interested in helping others. Description: The goal will be to increase awareness of components of suicide prevention and ability to identify and access both school and community resources. The primary vehicle for increasing suicide prevention awareness in the school setting will occur through implementation of gatekeeper trainings. These trainings will be presented to targeted populations including health class settings both at the high school, middle school, and special education health class, Link Crew, GSA club, and staff. Other efforts to increase awareness will also occur as time permits Time Commitment: Monthly meetings will be held to coordinate upcoming presentations. In addition, there will be some time during the school day required to conduct class presentations and some after school presentations to targeted groups. Activity Time Period: September to April Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Christina Gingle --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name of Group: Preble Pride Eligibility Requirements: This is a team of staff and student volunteers, committed to help create and sustain a school climate where all members of the Preble community live Preble Pride. Description: The Preble Pride Team has developed a simple mission, “Live Preble Pride” which is grounded in our four pillars … Respect, Responsibility, Dedication and Community. These four pillars describe what Preble Pride is all about. Our team looks for ways to recognize staff and students who are living Preble Pride in addition to ways in which we can promote our school and develop practices that teach how to live Preble Pride. Time Commitment: Monthly meetings, yet to be set for the upcoming school year. These meetings start at 3:15 pm and end at 4:30 pm. Location: A designated classroom. Activity Time Period: September to June Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Amy Olson-Guillen/Mr. Jim Van Abel --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name of Group: Safe and Supportive Schools (S3) Eligibility Requirements: This is a team of staff, students and parents who are dedicated to using Preble data to identify and implement ways to make Preble High School a safe, engaging environment for our students. Description: The S3 Team is committed to addressing areas of concern around bullying, AODA use and potentially serious student misbehavior. We also look at ways to engage more students in athletics and/or activities. We use data to identify areas of strength and areas in need of improvement. Numerous student organizations are affiliated with the S3 Team as we move forward with empowering students to become involved for the betterment of themselves and Preble High School. Time Commitment: We meet monthly, on a Thursday (TBD); from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm Location: Student Services Conference Room. Activity Time Period: September to May Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Caitlin Carlson / Mr. Thomas Jennings --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name of Group: School Improvement Team (SIT) Eligibility Requirements: This is a team of teachers identified and invited, by administration, from core content areas as well as student services, special education and student services. All the Administrators are part of the SIT. Description: The School Improvement Team focus is to address the Vision Cards, created by the GBAPS Board, that lead to overall school improvement as it relates to all areas of student performance (academic, attendance, school culture). The school improvement team meets to monitor the goals identified to ensure that the action steps are being met and address areas that need to be adjusted; documenting these changes in the Indistar Program. Time Commitment: We meet the third Wednesday of the month from 3:15pm to 4:30pm (Sept 18, Oct 16, Nov 20, Dec 18, Jan 15, 2014, Feb 19, Mar 19, Apr 16, May 21, June TBD) Location: LMC/Fiction Area Activity Time Period: September to May Advisor (sponsors): Ms. Natasha Rowell --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name of Group: Preble Student Council Eligibility Requirements: Elected positions. Students who meet academic and co-curricular requirements may run for Class Officer in the Fall of each year in the Student Council election. Students also may run to be on the Intra-City Student Council in May for the following year and are then considered a part of the Preble Student Council. Description: The Student Council coordinates Spirit Week and Homecoming activities in the Fall and Spring Fling Week in the Spring. The Council also sponsors the following dances: Homecoming, Snow Ball, Junior Prom, and Senior Ball. The Council coordinates four Red Cross blood drives during the school year. In addition, the council is active in WASC, the state organization for councils. Various special projects and charity fundraisers are also run throughout the school year. Time Commitment: Commitments vary, depending on projects. Members are asked to attend two monthly meetings during the school day and then meet in various committee meetings throughout each month to work on activities and projects, including lunch, study hall, after school and weekend hours. Students are also asked to work a four-hour shift at each of the four Red Cross bloodmobiles in the school year.
