Durham University Treasure Trap Presents Third-Year Goodbye 2011 17 - 19 of June at West End Outdoor Centre, North Yorkshire th th Erin - Isle of Mists – Summer, 1294 Across the sea to the west of Albion, the Emerald Isle stands divided. It has long been a land of shifting stones, of spirits and strange magic, of whispered voices from within the mounds on cold winter nights. Long ago, Erin was a land where Urca, humans and the Fair Folk lived in unity - a land where magic flowed like wine and the air was full of the music of dreams. It was a place where the Dreaming bordered on this world and fae walked the boundaries, passing into this world at twilight, at crossroads, or through the dreams and hopes of men. The magic of the land gave invaders pause - but some thought the Fae’s demands too high a price. After an age of co-existence, the High King turned on the fair ones and sealed away their power, ushering in the age of men. Like their distant kinfolk in Caledonia, though, the rule of the High Kings of Erin did not stand. With the power of the land waning and that of the gods on the rise, the line of Kings dwindled away and was finally broken. Erin of myth splintered into the Four Kingdoms, who have fought for control of the Isle and the long-empty title of High King for as long as history records. As Winter lost its grasp on the isle in this, the year 1294, the tension was rising into open war once again - checked only by an outpouring of magical disruption from the ancient mounds and groves. Milk curdled, infants stolen, odd lights in the mist... and the ancient Stone of Kings found broken at Tara. The Kingdom of Leinster is in uproar over the desecration - but no culprits have been found. Meantime the Orcs of Connacht have taken advantage of the chaos to begin raiding the monasteries of Ulster, the pious nation once birthplace of St. John; and the Mallanites of Munster have been agitating as ever, encouraging both sides into war. Perhaps it might have been only another surge of violence - save that the omens grew, in power and frequency, with the approach of Midsummer. The lords of the land could not ignore the near-rebellion of their people, terrified by the haunting of their towns - and the resurgence of ancient powers. The latest omen has at last spurred them to action: The Giant’s Causeway to the north, has risen from the ocean, shrouded in mist. Those who have made the treacherous journey across report that it leads to an island. Shortly after this discovery was made, rumours spread that each Kingdom would send delegates from among them to gather on this new island, the only truly neutral territory, in order to discuss the future and how best to preserve the peace. Some even say that the Kings and Queens themselves intend to meet; nervous, the people of Erin wonder just what has the four thrones so very concerned as to take such drastic steps. Dramatis Personae: The Crusader’s Children: Proud Ulster in the North, home of St. John before his ascension, seeks to spread his message and virtue throughout the land. Ruled by the benevolent Queen Gormflaith, the kingdom has a troubled history, and the army is constantly working to defend the nation’s monasteries and borders from orc invaders and Mallanite provocation. Nonetheless, Ulster’s people have a deep-seated faith and pride in their god; though the Kingdom has few allies, it stands united, a beacon of light amid the chaos. To The Victor, The Spoils: Strong Munster in the South has always had powerful leaders, given the competitive nature of the upbringing of its heirs, and the current King Keirren MacDonald and his family are no different. The Mallanites of the Royal House have a long-standing feud with the kin of the Queen of Ulster; some say it is only that the kingdoms are on opposite sides of the island which prevents all-out war between them. With them stand the Bloody-Handed Monks; small though the Vivamortian Monastery on Anglesey may be, their influence over their neighbours and their fearsome reputation - cannot be denied. The Upstart Warbands: Wild Connacht to the East is hardly recognized as an official ‘kingdom’ by the other three. The actual boundaries of this nation of orcs seem to fluctuate depending on their mood that day, leading to occasional violent ‘disagreements’ with other nations. Their new leader King Grunch seems determined to elevate this lowly kingdom’s status and standing, and seeks to be seen as an equal ruler to the other three. Others, however, are keen to stick with the old ways, with their preferred approach to diplomacy being a scrap followed by a drink. Keepers of Legend: Peaceful Leinster, to the West, is determinedly silent in the conflicts of its neighbours. The empty throne of the High King at Tara remains a solemn reminder for them of what becomes of anyone who seeks to dominate the island. Devout Morvanian King Diarmait has successfully kept his kingdom at peace with its neighbours throughout his long life, but with their closest ally Wessex in turmoil, rumour is that the nation is seeking to make new alliances. Among them, the tattered remnants of the once-legendary Knights of Caer Skiddaw; with the death of the Queen of Andrast, the grieving Knights of the Swan have set out questing for new purpose, and Erin’s ancient myths have drawn them across the sea. The Outsiders and the Uninvited: The Coasts of Erin have of late become home to pirates and outlaws, Fugitives From Across the Sea, taking advantage of the chaos and panic gripping the land ; an ocean lost into mist has drawn their curiosity. To make matters worse, the sources of the chaos once more begin to walk the earth - and some of the Powers of the Land, fair-folk and creatures of legend, feel the same draw north as the Lords of Erin - though who can say for what cause. On Midsummer’s Eve this year, the fate of the land hangs in the balance. Booking Form Midsummer will be an interactive-style weekend event from the 17th to 19th of June 2011, at the West End Outdoor Centre in North Yorkshire. This event is in Durham Treasure Trap’s “Third-Year Goodbye” style; this means it will use the TT rules system and setting, but won’t involve the characters from the regular game. The structure of the event means there are a large number of player spots, with a smaller number of monster crew needed to help with the cooking and the violence. Player places will cost £35, and crew places just £5. For this event, characters are pre-generated from player requests based on the event pitch above. Third-Years – players who are graduating finalists at Durham University this year, or who have otherwise been in the society for three years – will have the event written to focus around their preferences – non-third-year characters may have some things changed to fit! For this reason, it’s helpful to add notes to your form to let us know if there is anything you absolutely do or do not want to play. If you want to ask about any particular aspects of the event, please poke the Head Ref (Katie Logan) or the minion refs (Sean Patterson, Olwen Lachowicz, Freya Copley-Mills and Ethan McDonald-Smith) in person for a chat or via dutt3ygb@gmail.com. The booking deadline for the event will be the 8th of February 2011 – after that date we may still have crew places, but all character bookings must be in by then!
