SUMMARY: The SECOND assistant engineer is responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the vessel's engineering plant as directed by the Chief engineer. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Participate in the safe operation of vessel as required within USCG regulations Conduct drills with Marine and non-Marine crew as directed by the Master or with engineering crew Report any problems to the Chief engineer immediately Maintain a safe and clean engine room Assist shore technicians as needed Maintain daily logs Properly stock and inventory the vessel's spare parts Operate the vessel appropriate to the parameters of ISO-HSC Properly process and pump sewage and oily water tanks when needed Ensure that own performance and that of junior engineers meets legal and professional requirements Train new engineers as required Make emergency repairs when needed Perform daily/weekly/monthly preventative maintenance as per maintenance schedule Perform all other duties and responsibilities normally expected of a vessel's SECOND assistant engineer REQUIREMENTS/EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent required Must be a minimum f 18 years of age Must be a United States Citizen (it is not customary of the company to sponsor visas) SECOND assistant engineer Unlimited Horsepower USCG License 5 years' experience in marine engineering demonstrating the ability to handle increasing levels of responsibility STWC 95 Certificate High Speed passenger vessel experience preferred Water jet experience preferred Valid US Passport Must be able to acquire and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Successful completion of in-house IMO-HSC type rating program Pass pre-employment background check. Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG, including, but not limited to, pre-employment, random, and post-accident testing Must pass a USCG-required physical exam upon hire along with annually Maintain compliance with USCG licensing requirements including physical standards Computer literacy in Microsoft Office software Specific training and experience in management of major onboard systems by type and brand Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to develop and execute innovative solutions to engineering problems Excellent career record in the marine industry Possess and demonstrate superior mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, electronic, and other skills exercised in engineering management of a high capacity motor vessel Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing Logically and independently plan, organize, and complete work assignments Demonstrate well-developed interpersonal skills Set and achieve high standards of performance Demonstrate initiative and be able to make progress in multiple assignments under time constraints Possess excellent analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills Understudy the First assistant engineer, and be able to act in his/her absence Present a neat and well-groomed personal appearance commensurate with professional maritime standards Wear company uniform and required safety equipment Rotations are typically 61 days on, plus 2 days travel, and 59 days off WORKING CONDITIONS Outside conditions, extreme heat and cold. Marine operation subject to varied wake and motion. Observe for safety. Vision correctible to 20/40. Full color vision; no night blindness. Full range of all limbs. Ability to carry materials weighing upwards of 75 lbs. to include hoses, garbage, paint, and other. Ability to work on scaffold and ladders. Ability to determine safe or unsafe conditions.
